ECONOMY NEWS

  • Twenty-two states will raise their minimum wage in 2026, with many setting rates at or above $15 an hour. New York will now pay $17 an hour — a raise that could benefit Buffalo workers — while several southern states remain at the federal rate.  WBEN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Mary's Catholic Elementary School in Lancaster is preparing to open a second campus as its middle school classes will move to the former Our Lady of Pompeii School building next school year due to growing enrollment. The shift will expand resources for students (pre-K-8) and strengthen school community.  ABC 7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Since its Dec. 8 debut, NFTA officials say DLW Terminal is drawing 75 inbound and 91 outbound riders despite winter weather and fewer events, and expect numbers to improve. A skybridge to KeyBank Center and a redeveloped second story with restaurants + bars will soon boost the historic landmark.  WBEN
  • Buffalo's Coast Guard Station unveiled a new facility (worth $30 million) with weightlifting areas and two boat bays for storage and maintenance. The project was completed three months ahead of schedule and marks the first major upgrade in over a decade.  WBFO

HEALTH NEWS

  • The DEC advises New Yorkers to stay alert as highly pathogenic avian influenza spreads among wild birds and can infect domestic animals; local officials urge residents and farmers to avoid contact with sick birds and to follow safe disposal steps for carcasses.  WGRZ

  • After a thrilling win in Jacksonville, Bills fans plan trips to Denver where the team will face the Broncos in the AFC Divisional Round on Saturday, Jan. 17. Local travel agencies (AAA Western and Central NY) expect more inquiries for flights, hotels and driving options.  WGRZ
  • NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and Buffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula announced that KeyBank Center will host the NHL Draft on June 26 and 27. This will be the fifth time the city hosts the event.  WGRZ
  • The Bills will face the Jaguars on Sunday, Jan. 18, at EverBank Stadium (their playoff road struggles underline the challenge) as coach McDermott and quarterback Josh Allen tighten their game plan in pursuit of a Super Bowl run.
