COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Little Free Sled Library in University Heights offers free sleds at a small hill along the Rail Trail to boost winter outdoor play today. The initiative, a partnership between the University Heights Collaborative and the Tool Library, invites community donations.  WGRZ
  • Buffalo Fire shared on Facebook that Captain Scott Janowski passed away; he was promoted in 2022 and is remembered for his dedicated service. His loss has deeply affected the department and the local community.  WGRZ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Fire crews battled hotspots outside the historic former St. Ann's School on Emslie Street after a four-alarm blaze severely damaged the 100-year-old building, and firefighters worked until early Friday morning (concerns remain over a possible collapse and unresolved property ownership).  WGRZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Buffalo and Erie County officials briefed residents Sunday on winter storm preparations as a system is forecast to linger through Wednesday + locals are advised to monitor official updates.  WGRZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Niagara County health officials confirmed two rabies cases in raccoons — one on Jan. 8 on Shawnee Road in Cambria and another on Jan. 10 on Wheeler Road in Hartland. Dogs that encountered the animals had current vaccinations, and no post-exposure treatment is needed for the humans.  Spectrum News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Greenwood Hospitality's new management led by GM James Burke announced changes at the Richardson Hotel this year; a covered entrance installed without proper approvals will be removed in February to reopen the outdoor terrace on the third floor (a feature closed during earlier renovations).  WGRZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Brandon Steiner of CollectibleXchange announced that Bills fans can pre-order memorabilia from Highmark Stadium before the team moves to a new venue next year. Crews will start dismantling in March; an auction is set for April with items such as seats + signs + urinal troughs available in May.  Spectrum News
  • The Sabres lost 5-4 in overtime against the Minnesota Wild (earning one Eastern Conference point) in a hard-fought game.  WGRZ
  • 95-year-old West Seneca competitor Frank Zieminski broke three world records at Two Buffalo Cube Days, finishing the 3x3 cube in 5:49 — he also set records for two 2x2 events as family and teammates cheered him on.  ABC 7
  • Coach Lindy Ruff met with members of the 2005-06 team after a 5-3 win over Montreal and compared the game to the historic playoff runs. The Sabres have won 15 of 17 games and their renewed energy (along with strong fan support) is sparking local excitement.  Spectrum News
  • The Bills reactivated defensive tackle Ed Oliver and wide receiver Curtis Samuel from injured reserve ahead of their AFC Divisional Round matchup against the Denver Broncos Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Oliver had been sidelined since late October with a torn biceps and Samuel since mid-November due to injuries.  Spectrum News
  • Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen wiped away tears on Saturday after a 33-30 playoff loss to Denver, saying his five turnovers hurt the team. Coach Sean McDermott defended him — noting the loss was due to team errors — as the team reviewed missed opportunities.  WGRZ
