COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents and businesses in Orchard Park cleared more than a foot of lake effect snow that fell Tuesday morning as road crews kept streets and sidewalks passable, while additional snowfall later required ongoing cleanup efforts.  WBEN

  • Shake Shack is planning to open its new location at 2765 Delaware Avenue in Kenmore. The chain opened its Amherst store in May 2025 and is developing another outlet in Clarence & one at an I-90 service area.  ABC 7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Timmy the penguin made his debut at Aquarium of Niagara in honor of Penguin Awareness Day and joined Jules in a designated space to boost conservation efforts; he was brought from Brookfield Zoo Chicago as part of a collaborative breeding program among accredited zoos.  WBEN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tom Golisano is investing $20 million to convert the downtown former Buffalo News building at 125 Washington Street into the Golisano Institute for Business and Entrepreneurship this fall, where 100 students will begin a two-year program combining classes and internships + plans call for future enrollment expansion.  WBEN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The federal government has approved funds to remove nuclear waste at the West Valley site and extend cleanup efforts through 2037. The project will boost long-term environmental safety in the area.  WGRZ
  • Officials approved $846,000 on Tuesday to fund restoration of Buffalo Naval Park & repair the harbor ships. The repair work will remove old fuel and carry out general fixes.  WGRZ
  • The Buffalo Sabres hired Albany lobbying firm Ostroff Associates to seek state funding for renovations at KeyBank Center. Renovation plans will progress after the NCAA Tournament in March and the NHL Draft in June.  WGRZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • A review of Elderwood at Hamburg staffing data from April 1 to June 30, 2025 found that residents experienced delayed care on 77 days due to short-staffed shifts, leading families to raise concerns. Lawmakers remain divided on enforcing New York's 3.5-hour staffing rule + its ability to ensure quality care.  ABC 7

  • The Bills fired head coach Sean McDermott (after nine seasons with 98 wins and five AFC East titles) Monday. GM Brandon Beane now leads football operations as he searches for a new coach to guide the team toward a Super Bowl win.  WGRZ
  • Ultrarunner Noah Coughlan paused his trek in Hamburg Monday due to severe whiteout conditions and a courtesy police escort forcing him off the road, but he will resume running today aiming to finish his cross-country journey in Hawaii on July 4 to mark America's 250th birthday.  ABC 7
  • Buffalo Bills fans honor former coach Sean McDermott with tribute shirts and a planned snow sculpture near Highmark Stadium. The event will honor his legacy (each shirt sale donates $8 to the Skin Cancer Foundation); volunteers are needed Thursday at Prohibition 2020, with sculpture work starting Friday for weekend completion.  ABC 7
