  • A fast-moving fire destroyed a generational home in Newfane on Monday afternoon, leaving the Taylor family with a total loss. Neighbors and local businesses, including Cafora’s Pizza (Main Street), have rallied to support their rebuilding efforts.  WGRZ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Means Arms will pay $1.75M to families of 5/14 victims and will no longer sell the MMA lock in New York (as required by the settlement).  WGRZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • CEPA Gallery in downtown was damaged when a pipe burst last Friday and flooded its workspace — the hub for community workshops and art creation. Staff are working to dry equipment and salvage materials and are asking for donations as recovery continues.  ABC 7

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Erie County was awarded $30 million to improve Transit Road and redevelop Eastern Hills Mall into a mixed-use town center — new sewer lines and a pumping station in Clarence and Amherst will be added — that aims to boost local jobs and housing.  ABC 7
  • The NY Department of Labor is holding a job fair today (noon to 4) at Lockport Career Center for furloughed Candlelight Cabinetry workers. Roswell Park named 31 physicians top doctors and Hilbert College launched an Institute for Applied Artificial Intelligence to support responsible AI use.  WBEN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Buffalo State University launches the second year of its free Post Production Diversity Initiative, training 22 aspiring editors + boosting local post-production skills. Funded by an Empire State grant, the program received a record 75 applications + will conclude in August with virtual classes and career workshops.  Buffalo State University
  • Canisius University is launching a new 6-year program that lets students earn both their bachelor's and doctor of medicine degrees. The course provides a streamlined path to beginning a medical career.  WGRZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Attorney General James announced that a gun manufacturer will pay $1.75M to families of victims from May 14 — the settlement aims to provide a financial remedy to those affected.  WGRZ

  • Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin is at the Olympics, viewing his return as a unique business trip as he strives to help Sweden win gold & his team will play Finland on Friday and Slovakia on Saturday in Milan Cortina.  WGRZ
