COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local officials, faith leaders and community organizations paid tribute to Rev. Jesse Jackson, who died yesterday at age 84 after battling a rare illness — City Hall’s dome was lit in rainbow colors to honor his civil rights legacy.  WBFO
  • VIA will move its headquarters from Main Street to a new facility on Cooper Avenue in Tonawanda to expand services and job training for the blind. The organization plans to triple its manufacturing space and double its warehouse area, with relocation scheduled in stages beginning early 2027 (design-development stage underway).  WGRZ
  • On Jan. 23, NFTA Lieutenant Michael Fontana helped a stranded driver on 400 South in Elma by directing hot air from his vehicle as the man waited for gas + the driver later submitted a formal commendation for Fontana’s help.  WGRZ
  • West Herr donated an SUV to a quintuplet family in Buffalo to ease their daily transportation challenges (a gesture that underscores local community support).  WGRZ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Grocery stores are testing digital shelf labels that let prices change instantly and raise concerns over personal data use (surveillance pricing) that could hurt shoppers on fixed incomes. A state bill will require clear disclosure of how data is used, as debates continue over consumer protections in New York.  WBFO

  • Babcia's Pierogi is celebrating Paczki Day as Lent begins by selling 100 dozen jelly donuts - black raspberry, lemon, and Bavarian cream - at Broadway Market and East Aurora. Retired baker Richard, famed for his work at Famous Donuts, returned to craft this special batch.  WGRZ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Metal Craft Spinning and Stamping Ltd. will launch metal manufacturing operations in Niagara Falls at 4120 Hyde Park Boulevard. The company will invest $1.3 million in renovations and equipment (in a 24,760 sqft facility) to create 17 jobs while receiving up to $134,000 in tax credits.  WBFO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UB’s Urban Teacher Residency program continues due to a $2.4 million state grant + the loss of $4 million in federal funds shifted its model. The program now seeks residents eager to teach in Buffalo or Lackawanna city schools while removing the three-year retention requirement.  The Spectrum

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Air Reserve leaders are building a new training facility that will host a flight simulator for the 914th to keep airmen current if simulator flights are cancelled. The project will let local pilots avoid traveling to Pittsburgh and cuts costs (Col. Ryan Mowers said).  WBFO
  • Erie County unveiled its Extreme Temperatures Plan to help residents face summer heat at a community meeting at the Delavan-Grider Community Center; the plan, based on University at Buffalo research, will begin early actions now and be finalized by year-end 2026 (next meeting is set for April 20).  WBFO

  • The Bills’ 2B stadium nears completion on schedule but plans for development around it remain uncertain. Local officials and developers are considering future projects to shape the venue’s surroundings.  The Buffalo News
  • Erie County’s residential real estate reached a milestone as two more four-bedroom homes sold for over $1 million, including an 8,900 sqft home owned by the late Charles Balbach and a 104-year-old house at 80 Cleveland Drive in Buffalo + eight such homes have exceeded this key threshold this year.  WBEN
