COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Colvin Cleaners opened a dedicated headquarters for its Gowns for Prom program at 2312 Elmwood Avenue in Kenmore, offering students a boutique setting with gowns, shoes, accessories + jewelry. The program runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from March 3 through April 11 to better meet student schedules.  ABC 7

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Buffalo Bills held a job fair on Wednesday at the Bills Field House on One Bills Drive to fill about 125 part-time positions for the 2026 season at the new Highmark Stadium (roles include elevator operators and ticket greeters with immediate offers).  ABC 7
  • Amazon will lay off 544 workers at its Lancaster sortation center as it shifts jobs to regional sites; employees may work in Pembroke, Rochester, Hamburg or Tonawanda while 500 Walden Avenue workers keep their jobs. The company will hire 1,000 for a Town of Niagara center opening this summer.  WBEN

CULTURE NEWS

  • An Albany-area movie theater chain will take over Market Arcade Cinema (downtown) this spring after AMC Entertainment closed in December. The takeover will reopen its eight screens to offer local moviegoers a new viewing destination.  The Buffalo News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • SUNY is slated to receive almost $595 million for critical repairs in aging colleges, though Chancellor King said that covers only 60% of immediate needs as Buffalo State once lacked hot water (record enrollments include over 5,000 incoming freshmen).  WBFO
  • Buffalo State University hosts its 15th Southeast Asia Week from March 16-19 (free panels, talks and exhibits) on shifts in Southeast Asia. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New work requirements will start on March 1 for SNAP recipients in Erie County who have no dependents. They must work 20 hours weekly to keep benefits, with a three-month grace period (local officials have adjusted budgets for rising costs).  WBFO
  • State Senator George Borrello and Assemblyman Andrew Molitor are pushing to repower the idle NRG Energy Plant in Dunkirk with natural gas—a project that could restart operations in 18 months to 2 years. The plan seeks to reduce costly power imports that are raising bills in the region.  WBEN

  • A Buffalo family of scientists turned their daughter’s FOXG1 syndrome diagnosis into a gene therapy approved for clinical trial — and they will share their breakthrough tomorrow during Rare Disease Day at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.  WBFO

  • Sinatra Development secured final financing to restart Heritage Point @ Canalside in Buffalo, lifting years of delays and challenges. The milestone positions the waterfront project for targeted completion by the end of 2027 and remobilization as weather permits.  WGRZ
