  • Mohawk Place partnered with Sam Marabella to run its bar and aims to reopen this summer pending liquor license approval — Lockport’s chemical plant will close later, SPoT Coffee now operates at 155 Jefferson Ave with a grand opening next Wednesday, and the airport fire department is hiring.  WBEN

  • Erik Brady grew up in a family of Buffalo News journalists and won a Pulitzer Prize, crediting his Buffalo upbringing with sparking his love for architecture.  The Buffalo News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Western New York saw gas bills rise this winter due to a shortfall in energy replacement after retiring fossil fuel plants under the climate act. Michael Casciano from NOCO Energy said the state’s gap (only 41% of lost supply is replaced) is pushing prices higher and may lead to increases.  WBEN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Erie County announced Wednesday that residents can obtain rain barrels and compost bins to help curb runoff and boost garden health near home. Ordering details are available on the county website.  WGRZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Buffalo Niagara International Airport Fire Department is hiring firefighters for its Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting team. Interested candidates must apply by March 27, with a written test on April 18 and an agility test on May 16 — starting pay is $44,498 and climbs to $60,947 after three and a half years.  WGRZ
  • Residents in the Northtowns have raised concerns over the use of automatic license plate reader cameras as Tonawanda and Amherst continue using the technology. Amherst officials defended the decision and approved a new $300,000 contract to expand camera use, saying they protect privacy + support investigations.  ABC 7

HEALTH NEWS

  • A survey released by No Kid Hungry on Wednesday showed that two-thirds of respondents had to choose between buying healthy food and paying essential bills – 84 percent noted rising food prices. FeedMore WNY distributed food bags to elementary students on Thursday to support families.  WGRZ
  • Local former Lakeshore Hospital employees + an investor will convert a closed hospital into a $42 million inpatient center for mental health and substance use care, aiming to offer new treatment services in Western New York.  The Buffalo News
  • Crisis Services received a $245,000 grant from the Patrick P. Lee Foundation on Thursday to boost its Mobile Outreach Program that sends licensed mental health clinicians into the community for on-scene support (following a Dec. 2025 report urging a mental health-first approach).  WBFO

  • High school basketball championships run Thursday night at Buffalo State University and Fredonia State University, with boys (A1 at 5:00 p.m., A2 at 6:35 p.m., AA at 8:00 p.m.) and girls (B at 6:00 p.m.) matchups among Grand Island, Lewiston-Porter, Olean, Fredonia, North Tonawanda, Orchard Park, Eden and Southwestern.  WBFO
  • The Bills traded their 2026 second-round pick for Chicago Bears receiver DJ Moore and a fifth-round pick — the deal guarantees $15.5 million of his 2028 base salary, his 2026 pay is fully guaranteed, and his 2027 salary becomes fully guaranteed next week.  WGRZ
