COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Verizon’s service outage has forced Matt Urban Human Services to keep a senior housing building on the East Side under a 24-hour fire watch since late February. The nonprofit said the cost has reached about $14,000 and could climb to $22,000 by March 27 as Verizon works on a temporary solution (expected Wednesday).  ABC 7

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Buffalo’s historic M. Steffan’s & Sons at 761 Main Street — a family-run leather shop since 1851 — will close its doors at the end of March as the last generation retires, leaving behind cherished tools and records of five generations.  WGRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Buffalo State and New Era Cap hosted the third annual Design-a-Thon that challenged fashion and graphic design students to create art from recycled headwear. The winning team received a $500 award each and four students earned paid summer internships while all pieces are on display in the Technology Building lobby.  Buffalo State University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A multi-agency team began Operation Preservation Monday and is now working to remove fuel from the USS Croaker and water from the USS The Sullivans while protecting the Buffalo River — work will last about three weeks and end with the vessels being moved for repairs at Donjon Shipbuilders in Erie.  WBEN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local leaders are now securing new venues for the programs offered by Seneca Babcock Community Association after its sudden shutdown due to financial issues. The group served over 1,200 residents, and its day care operations will close on March 20 as officials work to replace lost services.  WBEN
  • Two women at the state DOT in Erie County are breaking barriers during Women's History Month. Resident engineer Heather McCourt oversees 60 plow trucks and more than 125 workers (while plow driver Melanie Wikarski clears roads during winter storms).  ABC 7
  • Buffalo public housing residents and community activists gathered Tuesday on Perry Street to demand better living conditions, citing pests, leaks, and no heat—concerns that were cut short by BMHA leadership. Residents may submit written comments ahead of Thursday's board meeting.  ABC 7

  • ECMC named Andy Davis as its new CEO, taking over on (June 15) after longtime leader Thomas Quatroche Jr. stepped down; Davis served as COO and brings over 20 years of health care experience.  WBEN

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Bills Mafia House in Orchard Park sold for $810,000 Tuesday when Bills Mafia House LLC paid over 15% above the $699,900 list price set in January. Owner Shane Prouty sold his 1942 home near Highmark Stadium, a known gathering spot for Buffalo Bills fans.  WBEN

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lake effect snow boosted local ski resorts as Kissing Bridge reached 101 days and Holiday Valley recorded over 9 inches last night. The slopes plan weekend events — tubing, pond skim and reduced Sunday lift tickets — to welcome families and young skiers for a strong season finish.  ABC 7
  • Sabres fans are waiting for playoff ticket details as COO Pete Guelli said the team will follow a game-by-game strategy with 15 regular season games left (first time since 2011). The Stanley Cup playoffs will begin April 18, and details will be shared once the season winds down.  WBEN
  • Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park is more than 90% complete and will finish inspections by late July so the Bills can hold their annual 'Blue and Red' scrimmage in early August. Ownership will soon shift from Erie County to New York State & crews complete final touches.  WBEN
