  • Emily Mondschein, Executive Director of Gigi’s Playhouse Buffalo — based in Kenmore — leads programs for people with Down Syndrome and celebrated World Down Syndrome Day on March 21. She left teaching after a prenatal diagnosis changed her path and helped pass New York’s Down Syndrome Awareness Bill to ensure better support and information for families.  WGRZ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Surveillance video recorded a pickup truck being swallowed by a sinkhole at the intersection of S. Elmwood Avenue and W. Tupper Street in Buffalo on Thursday—city officials covered the road and the Buffalo Sewer Authority is investigating the void under the roadway.  ABC 7

CRIME NEWS

  • A Buffalo man, Dareious T. Akbar, was sentenced to 15 years in prison plus five years of post-release supervision for injuring a Town of Tonawanda police officer—he fled a traffic stop in May 2023 while driving a stolen vehicle.  ABC 7

CULTURE NEWS

  • In summer 1932, Buffalo’s marine airport was dedicated by Navy planes and a 21-gun salute to mark the city’s growing role in aviation—its seaplane ramp now stands as a reminder of the facility’s decline due to weather challenges and shifting company plans by 1935.  Buffalo Rising

  • Erie County Sheriff John Garcia faces oversight questions as chief Dan Granville is accused of hitting parked cars in a county truck on Buffalo’s west side — lawmakers have set meetings on April 17 and April 24 to demand answers amid growing cover-up allegations.  ABC 7

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Real estate experts said the Buffalo market will see more homes for sale this spring even as prices rise and many owners with low mortgage rates are holding onto their homes. They warned that rising build costs may make it harder for buyers to afford a home — so buyers should act quickly in competitive areas.  ABC 7
  • CB Emmanuel Realty and Community Hope Builders are planning nine affordable single-family homes on Grey Street—targeted to low-income households earning 60%-80% of the area's median income. The developers are seeking to buy 18 vacant lots from the City to build three to four bedroom homes east of Mt. Aaron Village.  Buffalo Rising
