- ➤ The Buffalo Center for Health Equity is testing a new community responder program on Buffalo’s East Side—giving a phone number for help in nonviolent situations—to ease the burden on 911; a listening session is held today from 12 to 2 p.m. at the Health Science Center at Canisius University and the pilot will officially launch by year’s end. - ➤ Gov. Hochul has proposed expanding involuntary commitment to include mentally ill New Yorkers who cannot secure basic needs to help improve transit safety + the measure is one of four initiatives under discussion as state budget talks continue ahead of the April 1 deadline. Assembly Speaker Heastie and Senate Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins have not yet included the proposal in spending plans + officials say further negotiations will decide on funding for additional mental health programs. - ➤ Acting Mayor Chris Scanlon's campaign alleged that Senator Sean Ryan transferred funds from his Senate accounts to support his Buffalo mayoral run in order to evade contribution limits—reports showed his campaign held about $480,000 in cash while his mayoral account had roughly $32,000. The allegation came hours after Ryan held a news conference on his integrity agenda. WGRZ
- ➤ On March 28th, State Senator Sean Ryan unveiled his Integrity First Plan near City Hall—he said his plan will make public records easier to find and clean up conflicts of interest if he wins the election. The plan calls for reforming the Board of Ethics, changing the city contracting process, banning family hires, and limiting employee political donations. WBFO
- ➤ Herbert L. Greenman took charge of Niagara County's Public Defender's office on March 1 after an investigation revealed unprofessional conduct had led to a leadership change. At 78, he said he wants to mentor younger lawyers and improve the office's work (it handles over 7,000 criminal and family cases a year). The Buffalo News
