  • Construction has wrapped at Villa Maria for the Scott Bieler Center for Academic Excellence—the college’s largest project ever that now features new collaborative learning spaces—as the 2025 Boating 716 Show & Sale will begin Thursday at Hamburg Fairgrounds with free parking and admission. Gas prices in Buffalo have fallen 1 cent to $3.07 per gallon while nominations for the Business Ethics Awards, due by May 1, are now open.  WBEN

  • KAV, a California startup that uses 3D printers to make custom cycling helmets, will open a 7,000-square-foot facility in Buffalo's Old First Ward to boost production; the company has hired several Western New York workers and secured investment from Brown and White Ventures - a fund that supports startup growth.  ABC 7

CRIME NEWS

  • A 22-year-old Buffalo man pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter for killing his girlfriend on April 17 and was sentenced to 20 years in prison—plus 5 years of post-release supervision.  ABC 7

  • The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra will present Sibelius’ Symphony No. 1 featuring Concertmaster Nikki Chooi performing Behzad Ranjbaran’s Violin Concerto at Kleinhans Music Hall on Friday, April 11 at 10:30 a.m. and Sunday, April 13 at 2:30 p.m. The program blends classic and modern symphonic works (reflecting Chooi’s strong ties to Buffalo) and will highlight the orchestra’s commitment to innovative programming.  Buffalo Rising

HEALTH NEWS

  • Absolut Care of Aurora Park in East Aurora had 210 residents—66% of its 320-bed capacity—because it only ran as many beds as it could staff with permanent workers to avoid higher agency costs. This decision, made amid a staffing crisis, meant that hospitals sometimes struggled to find beds for patients needing care.  The Buffalo News

  • A new report from Rover says pet expenses will increase in 2025 as costs for veterinary care, pet food and supplies are expected to rise by up to 7% for dog owners and 10% for cat owners.
