EDUCATION NEWS

The district changed the plan by removing the walking rule and adding aides and cameras — steps that eased parent worries. ABC 7
- ➤ Bilingual teachers at School 33 said the shift to provide extra academic help only in English hurt native Spanish speakers—an issue they believe shows deeper inequities in the school’s bilingual program. The teachers told the School Board that students need strong instruction in their home language to build literacy skills. The Buffalo News
- ➤ Thirteen current and former University at Buffalo students — four still in school and nine recent graduates — had their visas taken away by Immigration and Customs Enforcement for small issues like a speeding ticket or offhand political remarks. Attorney Rosanna Berardi said these actions, seen across the country, leave little time for students to settle matters and may lead to more removals as the term ends. WBEN
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Four current UB students and nine recent grads had their student visas revoked by ICE in the past week—leaving them out of status and required to leave the country. University officials are providing support and advising affected individuals to consult a private immigration attorney. ABC 7
- ➤ Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said the county should stop owning the Sabres arena when its lease ends in 2026 because high repair and security costs are too much to bear. He said talks with the team and state will come later + leaving the arena does not mean the Sabres will leave Buffalo. The Buffalo News
- ➤ Acting Mayor Chris Scanlon presented a new city budget that tries to cover a $70 million gap with a one-time sale of parking ramps and other uncertain funds—he said the plan comes after a review that found $10 million in cuts and $16.5 million in savings.
