ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After one of the coldest winters and a spring that barely began, the New York Power Authority will gradually remove the Lake Erie-Niagara River Ice Boom as safe working conditions allow—crews will open spans carefully to keep ice from jamming the Niagara River in Buffalo. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Buffalo coalitions remain divided over a major project to reconnect East Buffalo — one group wants to restore Humboldt Parkway while another supports keeping the Kensington Expressway tunnel. • Former U.S. Rep. John LaFalce—who represented Western New York from 1975 to 2003 and helped secure federal funds during the Love Canal crisis—died at age 85. He was born in Buffalo and spent decades serving the region in Congress.  WGRZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • New York’s public health council denied three nursing home transfers that would have shifted county-owned or nonprofit facilities with low ratings to for-profit operators—raising concerns over low Medicaid rates and the future of long-term care.
