COMMUNITY NEWS

  • For years, neighbors warned about the unstable property at 102 Johnson Park, and weeks ago its back wall crumbled; the city removed the structure for safety.  ABC 7
  • The Catholic Diocese of Buffalo announced that St. John Vianney Parish in Orchard Park will hold only two masses per month starting May 24 due to financial challenges, though the church remains open (including weddings, funerals, and baptisms) while awaiting further Vatican guidance.  ABC 7
  • YMCA Buffalo Niagara is launching spring and summer programs for kids, offering camps and flag football, and registration for before and after school care is now open at local centers.  WGRZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sportsmen’s Tavern has celebrated over 40 years as a live music hotspot on Amherst Street. The family-run venue — owned by the Halls since 1985 — has expanded its stage and sound systems to welcome both local performers and touring acts.  WGRZ

  • Buffalo State will host Buffalo State Gives 2026 starting tomorrow, April 22, to support student programs such as academic advisement, emergency grants, and transportation funds. The event paves the way for a scholarship gala and fashion show on April 25.  Buffalo State University
  • Buffalo Public School District is asking for community feedback on its new safety plan that features weapons detection systems, severe weather closure guidelines (effective prior to 5 a.m.) and an updated emergency response card with hold-in-place and secure lockout options, with comments due by April 30.  ABC 7
  • Dr. Zorba Paster, former NPR host, will deliver a free lecture on "Finding Joy in Caring for Others" at Canisius University to share insights on health, wellness and resilience.  WGRZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper received a $443,000 federal grant Monday to monitor water quality in the Lake Erie watershed.  The Buffalo News
  • Buffalo residents are asked by state officials to turn off non-essential lights tonight (from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.) to protect migrating birds that rely on a dark sky, while state buildings will also reduce lighting to ensure safe navigation for these birds.  WGRZ
  • The Olmsted Parks Conservancy will host the Arbor Day Tree Expo on April 25, featuring live tree climbing, demonstrations, and hands-on activities for community members to enjoy (local nature event).  WGRZ
  • Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve is expanding outdoor trails (for mobility aids) to improve park accessibility for visitors and benefit those needing easier-to-use paths.  WGRZ

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Town and county leaders updated Amherst residents on redevelopment progress for the former Boulevard Mall and Westwood Country Club property (soon to become Willowdale Park). The mall demolition awaits completion of an eminent domain process, while plans for 171 acres of park space move forward slowly.  ABC 7
