- ➤ Park Grove Realty is seeking more than $1.4 million in tax breaks to fund its $30.2 million plan to renovate Iroquois Lofts at 619 Exchange St into 64 market-rate apartments (including 10 workforce housing units) as the historic building suffers from water damage and code issues. Construction will begin in June and is expected to finish by the end of 2026 (if financing is approved). The Buffalo News
- ➤ Flat 12 Mushrooms is set to lease connected buildings at 612 Northland Ave pending approval from the Buffalo Urban Development Corp next week—this expansion will let the company produce five times more lion's mane mushrooms and chicken-substitute products for local schools and senior care facilities while keeping its Chandler Street operations. - ➤ Defense attorneys for Payton Gendron, who killed 10 Black people almost three years ago, filed a motion Thursday asking that his federal death-penalty trial be delayed until on or after June 1 to avoid the anniversary prejudice—although a judge already set the trial to start in January and a decision on the new request is pending. - ➤ National Grid submitted a plan on Friday to raise electric bills by 20% over three years — customers could see a $25 monthly rise by the end of the plan. The proposal funds $1.4 billion for grid upgrades, $351 million for gas improvements and offers over $290 million in bill discounts for vulnerable customers while it is under review by the Public Service Commission, with the first rate hike set to start on Sept. 1 if approved. - ➤ Due to understaffing in state prisons and a recent wildcat strike, Erie County jails now hold 125 state prisoners waiting for transfer to state facilities — a rise from just two inmates before the strike, with transfers postponed until May 5.
