ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Fire investigators from the Buffalo Fire Department said a stove burner left on in the second-floor kitchen started Thursday's four-alarm blaze at the Paul William Beltz building at 36 Church Street — the fire severely damaged the building, led to two minor injuries, and demolition of the site is planned soon.  WBEN

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Town of Amherst finished its review of a building permit application from MG2 Corp — which has partnered with Costco Wholesale — and the permit has been ready for pickup since April 16; a Costco representative will collect the permit soon. The new store is expected to open by spring 2026.  WGRZ
  • Crown-Y Recycling closed its doors on Friday after its leaders accused Tomra of colluding with distributors to force its customers to switch, alleging the company used deceptive tactics to eliminate competition. The Cuba business, which had served the region for 41 years and reduced its workforce before its shutdown, has filed a lawsuit seeking compensation and an order to stop Tomra's alleged anticompetitive conduct—asserting that exclusive distributor contracts paved the way for a local monopoly.  The Buffalo News

  • Buffalo Police are seeking help to locate 14-year-old Faith Whippo who was last seen leaving 21 Jones St. wearing pajama pants, a black sweater with a red logo and possibly carrying a Hello Kitty duffle bag — she is Hispanic with brown eyes, light skin, purple and black hair, a nose ring, stands 5'6" tall and weighs 236 lbs, and anyone with information should call 911 immediately.  WGRZ

  • Nusantara Arts has announced Ayo!—an Indonesian arts festival that will bring music, film and dance to Buffalo. The festival will be held on Friday, May 23 at the Indonesian Culture Center and on Saturday, May 24 at the Connecticut Street Armory—with live gamelan and Balinese dance shows led by renowned artists.  Buffalo Rising
  • Buffalo restaurateur Dennis DiPaolo, owner of the beloved Ilio DiPaolo's Restaurant, is featured in a new children’s book titled 'Walking Each Other Home: Zachary's Mission — A Hospice for Children' that follows an 8-year-old boy with terminal cancer learning the importance of caring through shared meals. Author John Masiulionis, who has known DiPaolo for over 20 years, will hold book signings today at Barnes & Noble Clarence Mall from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and at Lancaster Public Library from 3 to 4 p.m.  ABC 7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal officials restored the immigration status of all 17 UB students last weekend after their visas were terminated three weeks ago. University officials said that five current and two former students had their records reactivated Friday while the rest were reinstated over the weekend — they continue to advise the affected students on their academic plans.  The Spectrum

  • Bishop Timon-St. Jude High School will honor its 1970, 71 and 72 Manhattan Cup-winning teams at a hall of fame gala today that recalls tough games and smart plays on the court—legacies that sent players to college and the NBA and continue to inspire local fans.  The Buffalo News
  • The Buffalo Bills are inviting season ticket holders to register as background extras in the upcoming Hallmark Christmas movie Holiday Touchdown: A Bills Love Story. Non-season ticket members can also sign up until May 9 at noon while season ticket members must register by May 14 at 5 p.m.—roles for extras are subject to availability.  WGRZ
