  • Refugee women at Stitch Buffalo are crafting Sabres-themed hats to meet growing orders during the playoff run. The effort boosts local income and strengthens community bonds as fans across Western New York show their team pride.  WGRZ
  • Buffalo native and Korean War veteran George Nicholas Sr. celebrated his 100th birthday at Deco Lounge on Sunday as family, friends, and neighbors gathered in downtown Buffalo. A special proclamation honored his milestone (he credited his long life to love).  WGRZ
  • Norine Kawzynski celebrated her 100th birthday at Father Baker Manor on Sunday. Friends and family gathered for songs + stories that honored her long life of kindness and faith.  ABC 7
  • The Tool Library has launched its Little Free Seed Library to share seed packets and make gardening accessible at a pocket park outside its Main Street storefront. Darren Cotton said residents may take and donate seeds anytime & volunteers help maintain the self-sustaining cycle.  WGRZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Buffalo State will host the Kwibuka event on Saturday, May 9 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Campbell Student Union, co-sponsored by the Buffalo Rwanda Community Association, where local families honor the 1994 genocide victims, learn about Rwanda’s heritage, and enjoy traditional food + community conversations.  Buffalo State University

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Buffalo jumped 25 cents to $4.41 per gallon, reaching levels not seen since 2022 according to AAA.  WBEN
  • Gas prices are rising in Western New York, with Buffalo now at $4.41 per gallon and state averages near $4.46. The increase follows higher oil prices (ranging from $103 to $109 per barrel) and boosted demand amid lower domestic supply.  WGRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The SUNY Undergraduate Research Conference was held on April 21 at SUNY Fredonia and featured Buffalo State's largest group of 44 student presenters from 11 departments, guided by 14 faculty mentors.  Buffalo State University

  • The Montreal Canadiens will visit Buffalo for Game 1 of the playoff series at KeyBank Center at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The best-of-seven series will include additional games through May 18 with TV broadcasts on TNT, truTV, HBO MAX, ESPN, and ABC (and radio on WGR 550 with Sabrehood Block Parties).  WGRZ
  • The Sabres advanced to the second round and ticket prices remain high as playoff excitement builds, with VIPTix President & CEO Nick Giammusso noting limited availability for fans.  WBEN
