  • 24-year-old Meghann Simpson, a Buffalo sexual assault survivor, works to empower abuse survivors and educate local communities as co-founder of nonprofit Now She Speaks and as a youth peer advocate (teaching early prevention and body boundary conversations).  ABC 7
  • The Buffalo Bills donated $43,675 to FeedMore WNY for families with food allergies after a two-day donation drive at Wegmans on May 3 and May 4—The Bills Foundation added $10,000 to further support those in need.  WGRZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Niagara Falls Turtle building—a former Native American cultural center—is recognized nationally for its role in community preservation. Local advocates, including Friends of the Niagara Turtle and high school Native American groups, hope the owner will apply for state landmark designation to revive the property.  WGRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Buffalo State University will confer degrees on nearly 1,700 undergraduate and graduate students during its 153rd Commencement on May 17 at the Sports Arena. Three ceremonies are scheduled at 9:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 5:00 p.m.—each featuring awards and distinguished addresses while faculty are invited to join the procession or volunteer.  Buffalo State University

  • After REAL ID went into effect May 7, DMV offices have seen long lines and appointment-only service—residents are updating their IDs for air travel and federal access. Officials advise that if you do not plan to fly soon, you can wait for your renewal.  Spectrum News

  • The Buffalo Sabres hired former NHL star Eric Staal as a special assistant to the general manager (reporting to GM Kevyn Adams) and he will help scout players and prospects. Staal, a Triple Gold Club member (he won the Stanley Cup, Olympic gold, and a world championship) who played for the Sabres in the 2020-21 season, brings valuable experience to his new role.  WGRZ
