COMMUNITY NEWS

  • East Amherst resident Laura Teplitsky started the May You Be Inspired food drive this month to honor her late father by supporting FeedMore WNY as it faces cuts to federal funding. The drive has already received many donations and features painted garden rocks as tokens of thanks.  WGRZ
  • Buffalo Waterfront revealed its 2025 summer season lineup at Canalside with more than 100 events including reopening celebrations that began May 9 and a replica War of 1812 boat launch set for May 17. The schedule offers fitness classes starting May 27—live concerts, artisan markets, children’s programs and more will run through Labor Day.  ABC 7

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Zephyr Partners completed a $43 million cannabis growing facility at Lakeside Commerce Park in South Buffalo, featuring a large warehouse and a training building built in two phases. Fluent Corp of Tampa will finish the setup and bring in plants in June so the first buds can be on sale by October — marking the first step in a larger cannabis campus plan.  The Buffalo News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three Buffalo State alumni will receive the Distinguished Alumnus Award and speak to the Class of 2025 at the 153rd Commencement ceremonies on May 17 at the campus Sports Arena. Del Reid will address the School of the Professions at 9:00 a.m., Morgan Hardy will speak for the School of Arts and Sciences at 1:00 p.m. & Karen Saxon will address the School of Education at 5:00 p.m.  Buffalo State University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Hochul pledged $10M to Buffalo's East Side to help businesses and property owners with major building upgrades as part of the state budget. The East Side Building Fund will offer up to $400,000 for small projects and $2M for anchor projects—efforts to preserve the neighborhood's unique character.  WGRZ
  • State lawmakers finalized a $254 billion spending plan that gives Buffalo approval to sell parking ramps to a new city parking authority and impose a 3% hotel occupancy tax to help address a deficit estimated to exceed $70 million. The plan also includes $166 million in state aid for the city — funds from the Aid and Incentives for Municipalities package.  The Buffalo News
  • Governor Kathy Hochul visited Buffalo last Friday to announce a $10 million investment aimed at repairing and improving buildings on the East Side. Applications for the East Side Building Fund must be submitted by 4 p.m. on June 27 — public meetings will be held later this month and in June to help applicants.  ABC 7

HEALTH NEWS

  • Horizon Health Services held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday at its new family recovery center at 200 Sterling Drive in Orchard Park — the center now features over 10 new offices, enhanced group room space and a multi-purpose area for art therapy and family meetings.  ABC 7

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Symphony Property Management is building a 132-unit apartment project in the Fruit Belt on Michigan Avenue and Maple Street near the Medical Campus—designed by Stieglitz Snyder Architecture. The $25 million project will have four stories on Maple Street and five on Michigan Avenue and include an enclosed garage with 78 parking spaces—featuring a fitness center and offices for the manager.  Buffalo Rising
