ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Amsdell Road between Route 20 and Route 5 is closed in Hamburg after a railroad bridge was heavily damaged when struck; railroad traffic is shut off until further notice (the driver remains fine).  ABC 7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Buffalo Place announced that the free Thursday & Main concert series returns downtown for its 10th anniversary; concerts run from June 4 to July 30 at Fountain Plaza with local and national acts, and Fetty Wap will appear at Outer Harbor Live on Aug. 22 (8 p.m.).  WGRZ
  • The Buffalo Poet Laureate shared reflections on East Side resilience today, noting that community spirit and art helped the neighborhood overcome challenges (insights meant to inspire local unity).  WGRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Satish K. Tripathi prepares for his final UB commencement ceremonies as he marks 15 years of transforming the university. Appointed in 2011, he boosted research, athletics and infrastructure—including the Jacobs School of Medicine relocation—and will return as faculty after stepping down as president at July's end.  WGRZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper’s Buffalo Blueway initiative has improved access to the revived Buffalo River + once declared ‘dead’ before restoration work began in the 1980s, the project now invites residents to enjoy the renewed waterway.  The Buffalo News
  • Messinger Woods Wildlife Care and Education Center volunteers advise locals to leave baby birds and other young wildlife alone when spotted outside nests, as they are learning to fly (parents remain nearby). They ask that anyone unsure first call the center to ensure the animals stay with their families.  ABC 7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Buffalo's public pools have dwindled over the past decade so that only Cazenovia Pool remains open year-round for swim lessons. City officials plan to seek state and federal grants to boost lifeguard training and expand access this summer (a move to break a cycle of neglect).  ABC 7

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA now allows one California company to sell fruit-flavored e-cigarettes for adult use — including mango, blueberry and two menthol flavors — using a digital age-gating system to block underage buyers.  WGRZ

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Costco is expected to open this fall in Amherst at the former Tony Roma's site on Ridge Lea Road + some residents have expressed concerns over potential traffic increases as construction continues on the area's first store.  ABC 7
