COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Orchard Park’s 12-year-old Brady Donahue ran 32.1 miles in 10 days in March to honor his cousin Reese with Down syndrome—each mile symbolized the extra copy of chromosome 21 that defines the condition. He ran with friends through cold and rainy days and also wrote a research paper on Down syndrome that earned praise from his family.  ABC 7
  • A replica of USS Trippe is coming to Canalside for its launch and inauguration today—built by Buffalo Maritime Center volunteers, it will be docked through the summer as a working example of the small vessel that fought in the War of 1812.  Buffalo Rising

CULTURE NEWS

  • Parishioners gathered Friday at Saint Stanislaus Church in Buffalo to pray against the potential closure of Catholic churches in Western New York—more than a dozen churches sent letters to the Vatican and local advocates called for closer adherence to Canon Law under the Road to Renewal. The local group Save Our Churches urged church leaders to reconsider their current plans as community concerns continue to grow.  ABC 7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • South Park High School today at 10 a.m. will unveil a new permanent memorial inside its Hall of Honor honoring 29 alumni who sacrificed their lives in military service—each veteran recognized with a plaque noting the Conspicuous Service Cross Medal. The ceremony coincides with Armed Forces Day and gives students a clear link to their school's history.  ABC 7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County Executive Mark Poloncarz said the federal budget proposal—cutting Medicaid and other human services—would cost Erie County up to $100 million if approved.  The Buffalo News
  • Gov. Hochul will visit the Seneca Nation Territory on Tuesday to issue a formal apology for decades of trauma at the Thomas Indian School — the visit marks the first time a sitting New York State governor has come to Seneca Land and aims to address harm to former students and their descendants.  WGRZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Catholic Health System will pay nearly $3.3 million to settle claims it submitted improper Medicare claims over physician referrals as stated today by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of New York. The settlement resolves allegations that its compensation with non-employee physicians did not meet legal limits under the Physician Self-Referral Law + no liability was determined.  WGRZ
  • More than 2,500 staff members from 11 nursing homes will strike for seven days starting Tuesday at 6 a.m.—they demand better wages and benefits. Negotiations with 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East have led to a reduction from an initial list of 27 facilities.  ABC 7

SPORTS NEWS

  • Buffalo Bandits star forward Dhane Smith was named NLL Offensive Player of the Year after he broke his own assist record with 102 assists in his 12th season (2024-25), making him the second player from the team to win the award. He recorded at least four points in every regular season game and helped lead his team before the NLL Finals began on May 16 at KeyBank Center.  Spectrum News
