COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Erie County SPCA launched its Pets for Vets initiative today — adoption fees are waived for active duty service members, reservists, and other veterans.  WGRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Ken-Ton parent challenged 27 library books for explicit sexual content by sending detailed emails to district officials. Ken-Ton officials said school librarians will review each challenged title—if needed, they may remove the books from circulation.  The Buffalo News
  • The Buffalo School Board is set to vote on a budget that would spend nearly $80 million from cash reserves to cover a gap while cutting about 20 student support staff—raising questions about the impact on mental health support for students. Board members stressed community concerns during the meeting and warned that failing to pass the budget on Wednesday could delay key approvals and a planned bond sale.  The Buffalo News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New York will expand its Veterans Tuition Award to cover full tuition at approved SUNY colleges and vocational programs for eligible veterans starting July 1. Applications will be accepted year-round for veterans with at least four years of active duty or those honorably discharged from Vietnam, the Persian Gulf or Afghanistan.  Spectrum News

  • Today, bands played at Buffalo Ironworks for the Tune into Wellness concert to support mental health — mental health resources were provided for those in need.  WGRZ
  • Over Memorial Day weekend, nursing home workers in Cheektowaga picketed over low pay, benefits, and staffing shortages as part of a week-long strike by Local 1199. The McGuire Group’s Garden Gate contract remains unsettled — further talks will decide if the strike ends on Tuesday or continues longer.  WGRZ

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Iskalo Development placed a for sale sign on the Old Editions Book Store property at 68 E. Huron Street after receiving extra time to renovate the space. The developer is asking $3.995 million for the site and plans to add two new floors to create 35 apartments and 11,000 sq.ft. of commercial space—changes that follow the demolition of two Oak Street buildings for future parking.  Buffalo Rising

  • The Buffalo Bandits won their seventh NLL title by beating the Saskatchewan Rush 15-6 on Saturday—making them only the second team to win three straight championships—and showing strong play from goalie Matt Vinc and Finals MVP Ian MacKay.  WBEN
