COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Over 2,500 people participated in the Girls on the Run 5K in Buffalo, and nearly 1,000 girls ran to build their self-confidence. Schools and community coaches had prepared the runners since April—helping them reach this important milestone.  ABC 7
  • VFW post 7545 elected Commander Degennaro as its first female commander—marking a historic milestone for the organization.  WGRZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Tonawanda Town Board will hold a public meeting today at 7 p.m. at the Municipal Building in Kenmore on Delaware Avenue to discuss proposed changes to slow traffic on Colvin Boulevard between Sheridan Drive and Kenmore Avenue. Town Supervisor Joe Emminger said officials will review public input on a plan for a three-lane road with a center turning lane and bike lanes (after over 75 accidents in five years) while addressing residents' parking concerns (raised in recent inquiries).  WBEN
  • Mayor Christopher P. Scanlon said the city is planning to build a new animal shelter to replace the overcrowded and unclean facility on Oak St.—the new shelter, set to open in 2026, will feature modern indoor and outdoor spaces designed for better animal care. Critics have long complained about the poor conditions at the current shelter and hope the new site will improve the situation for animals and staff alike.  The Buffalo News
  • Amherst town judge Jeffrey Marion is challenging GOP candidate Chris McMaster for the ballot lines for town justice; early voting begins June 14 and the primary is set for June 24—Marion, who was appointed in January and also seeks the Working Families endorsement, says his actions comply with state law.  The Buffalo News

  • Mt. Olive Senior Manor opened at 227 Sheridan Ave. on the East Side, providing 65 affordable apartments for residents 55 and older and 20 units for those needing extra care—built as a $27 million project by CSS Construction and People Inc. that fulfills a 30-year vision by former pastor Rev. Dr. William Gillison; officials now plan an additional housing project with 18 single-family homes on nearby city-owned lots.  The Buffalo News

  • The 2025 NHL Scouting Combine at Harborcenter in Buffalo ended last week—top prospects from all 32 teams took fitness tests and met with executives—and 18-year-old center Roger McQueen recovered from a back injury while comparing his play to local star Tage Thompson. Players like Michael Misa said they will join the NHL at the upcoming draft in Los Angeles.  Spectrum News
