Good morning, Buffalo. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 14th of June.
COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Buffalo is ready for a busy weekend as the Juneteenth Festival & Parade kicks off today at MLK Park, with the Allentown Art Festival, a concert at the AKG Art Museum, and a protest planned in Niagara Square. Organizers & city leaders say police will boost staffing to keep all events safe. ABC 7
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Juicy Burger Bar is open in the former Tacos, Community and Beer spot on Delaware Avenue near Gates Circle—operating at 1274 Delaware with a menu of twenty burger and chicken sandwich options as well as new items like smash burgers and a large soft pretzel. Vice President of Operations Heather Williams, who started the brand nine years ago in Hamburg, said the restaurant offers weekday deals including $4 off burgers and chicken sandwiches at lunch and $1 wings on Mondays and Thursdays. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Amherst Police are asking for help finding 25-year-old Darris Wence who was last seen June 12 at 6 a.m. near North Forest and Maple Road and who is in danger due to a history of mental illness; he is described as a white male (5 foot 9, 185 pounds) with brown hair and brown eyes wearing a blue grey faded t shirt and grey Nike shorts. WGRZ
- ➤ A jury in Buffalo found Dale O. Cummings guilty of first-degree murder for ambushing two repairmen at a Zenner Street home last year—evidence showed he used an illegal, loaded assault rifle when arrested on the East Side—and he now faces the possibility of life in prison. WGRZ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Buffalo Acting Mayor Chris Scanlon has raised more money from individual donors than his rivals across the city’s 35 neighborhoods—he pulled in $720,253 compared to Sean Ryan’s $296,629, with key support in areas like South Park while some neighborhoods have fewer than 10 donors. Mapping data shows the race is supported unevenly, as Ryan leads in parts of Elmwood-Bidwell and only Scanlon has donors in certain areas. WBFO
- ➤ Community members and city leaders will begin a $32.5 million streetscape project on Jefferson Avenue this summer to install new asphalt, curbs, sidewalks, street lighting, bike upgrades, benches, and trash receptacles — a long-requested effort funded through federal, state, and local resources that aims to boost the historic corridor's vibrancy. ABC 7
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A Buffalo News investigation found that nearly 5,000 water sources in 193 school buildings across 28 Erie County districts tested above the safe 5 ppb lead limit from 2020 to 2024, raising concerns about student health. Some schools have replaced or filtered taps while others rely on temporary fixes, and officials say funding and maintenance challenges persist—leaving many outlets potentially unsafe for drinking.
