COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nearly three dozen local veterans returned from a trip to the nation's capital and received a welcome back ceremony at Buffalo Niagara International Airport—honoring their service.  WGRZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Buffalo marked its 49th Juneteenth parade with over 4,000 people honoring the end of slavery and celebrating Black heritage. Leaders noted the parade began on Jefferson and has grown over the years — a tradition rooted in history.  Spectrum News
  • The Aquarium of Niagara is preparing to celebrate its 60th anniversary in July with new additions—a 60-foot mural, a VR shark tank dive experience, and accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. President and CEO Chad Fifer said the upgrades will lead to campus expansion and highlight the aquarium’s long role in the region.  WBFO
  • On Friday, the 68th annual Allentown Art Festival took place in Buffalo, where more than 350 artists set up white tents along Delaware, Franklin, Allen and Virginia as police began closing streets near 6 p.m.—one artist almost cut down a tree with a handsaw to clear his space. Students from St. Mary's School for the Deaf ran their first booth selling art inspired by sign language while long-time artist Roland Paronish sold his metal sculptures.  The Buffalo News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • OLV Human Services introduced Victory Education, a unified school system that streamlines special education services for students with disabilities in South Buffalo and Lackawanna—this new setup combines programs into three branches to reduce confusion. The system plans to open five classrooms and hire 42 special education teachers to meet growing demand.  The Buffalo News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Orchard Park officials are considering restoring a height limit of 35 feet on buildings near the new Bills stadium to boost pedestrian safety and support community development. The proposal — based on public input, market studies, and stakeholder concerns — will be reviewed by the Town Board following a public hearing and environmental study.  The Buffalo News
  • Early voting for the primary contests in Buffalo started on Saturday and several polling places saw slow turnout. Voters said they valued the easy process and felt it was their duty to vote — a sign they hoped to bring change to local leadership.  The Buffalo News
  • On June 14, former fire commissioner Garnell Whitfield spoke on Weekend Edition about his run for Buffalo mayor. He said he would fix Humboldt Parkway, improve city services, & change tax rules while running as an independent regardless of the primary outcome.  WBFO
