COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Buffalo Diocese has asked parishes to contribute $80 million in cash and raise an extra $30 million from property sales to cover nearly three-quarters of a $150 million settlement for clergy sex abuse, and some parishes face steep assessments that have sparked local outrage—parishioners and legal experts say the plan is unfair and may violate church law. More community members are now exploring legal options to challenge the settlement formula.  The Buffalo News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Paul Steinbruckner and other cannabis growers in the December queue have been waiting since 2023 for state approval while paying high rent on their leased properties—state officials say they are reviewing the applications slowly to avoid market saturation. The delays have cost small craft growers significant time and money as they watch hopes for a fair chance at a license fade.  The Buffalo News

CRIME NEWS

  • On Wednesday evening, UB police and law enforcement arrested 15 pro-Palestinian demonstrators, including five UB students and others with no known university ties, after they refused to disperse by dusk, and the arrested individuals will face charges of loitering, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest+ a protester was injured and university officials said they will review the incident.  The Buffalo News
  • Ten pro-Palestine protesters filed a lawsuit on May 1 against UB and 10 police agencies, alleging violent suppression during a forced dispersal at UB North Campus in Amherst—15 protesters were arrested after police ended a Muslim evening prayer, and the suit seeks damages based on injury records.  The Buffalo News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Buffalo’s Allentown Art Festivals concluded Sunday with two events showcasing art. The 26th annual Allen West Art Festival limited participation to 130 local artists along Allen Street between Elmwood and Wadsworth — while the larger Allentown Art Festival featured 350 artisans from across the country.  ABC 7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Erie County early voting for the June 24 primary saw 732 ballots cast on Sunday, pushing the two-day total to 2,121 ballots — Board of Elections Commissioners Ralph M. Mohr and Jeremy J. Zellner announced that turnout passed 2,000.  The Buffalo News
  • A state audit found that Alden owes more than $84,000 to taxpayers who overpaid their property taxes because the Town Clerk’s Office did not properly record, deposit, or report tax payments. Supervisor Colleen Pautler said the town has begun correcting the issues—formal complaints have been filed while oversight agencies review past mismanagement.  The Buffalo News

  • Erie County real estate records show many properties were bought and sold — sale prices ranged from $6,500 to over $21 million in deals involving both homes and commercial properties.  The Buffalo News

  • During a club soccer game on June 4 in Wilson, families saved coach Andrew Pihlblad’s life when he collapsed and bystanders quickly administered CPR and used an AED—paramedics later took him to Buffalo General where he is recovering. The Wilson school district will honor the rescuers and coach Paul Herrmann plans to arrange CPR training for his team.  ABC 7
