Good morning, Buffalo. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 17th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sunday, parishes in the Buffalo Diocese were notified that they must contribute to a $150 million sex abuse settlement, with the churches responsible for $110 million through cash contributions and property sales. Save Our Buffalo Churches said the varied amounts—from $17,300 to nearly $2 million—were excessive and urged church leaders and state authorities to explore other funding options before the July 15 deadline.  WGRZ

CRIME NEWS

  • A jury found 32-year-old Dale O. Cummings guilty of first-degree murder for fatally shooting 59-year-old Babul Meah and 39-year-old Abu Yousuf at a vacant home on Zenner Street in Buffalo in 2024—he is scheduled for sentencing on July 25.  ABC 7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • D’Youville University announced plans to open a new College of Osteopathic Medicine on Delaware Avenue to help with the local doctor shortage—its first class will start in fall 2026 and students will move into the new building in fall 2027.  WGRZ
  • Buffalo Schools cut 12 counselor positions, 9 social worker roles and about 27 full-time equivalents in the 2025–2026 budget, leaving many larger elementary schools with caseloads of 180 to 200 students — staff report they were already understaffed. Counselors, social workers and psychologists explained the cuts and extra non-support duties further strained their ability to guide students effectively — they warned that the reduced teams hurt the overall support system.  The Buffalo News
  • Joe Eberhardt retired from Frontier Central High School after 30 years teaching pre-calculus and geometry—he made nearly 5,800 skydiving jumps at school events and local games, leaving a lasting impact on students and the community.  WGRZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Unions representing healthcare workers at Kaleida Health agreed to extend their contract through June 24—continuing talks on staffing issues affecting over 8,000 workers at several local facilities. Bargaining will resume Monday as both sides work toward a long-term deal while considering the risk of a strike if no agreement is reached.  WBEN
  • Research shows nutrient deficiencies can affect mental health by causing fatigue, poor focus and irritability — experts say that inflammation from processed foods might block important brain signals. Psychiatric nurse practitioner Daniel Breeyear and pediatrician Madni advise families to choose balanced meals with fruits, vegetables and lean proteins to help keep the gut and brain healthy.  Spectrum News
