Good morning, Buffalo. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 19th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After five arrests were made during Kenmore Days, Mayor Patrick Mang said the village noted safety issues and is considering changes — if confrontations continue, future festivals may be canceled or modified. The event, held in the park and known for food, carnival rides and music, has raised concerns among local residents.  WBFO
  • The Buffalo Catholic Diocese met with parish leaders last week to explain a plan for a $150 million clergy abuse settlement—each parish will pay a set percentage of its cash and investments based on its status and any upcoming mergers. The diocese said it will also use cash from real estate sales and contributions from affiliates to help cover the settlement and protect local churches from heavy claims.  WBEN

CRIME NEWS

  • Lawyers will receive a trial start date next week for Buffalo mass shooter Payton Gendron, who killed 10 Black people and injured 3 others in May 2022, while his judge said he can only be a little flexible with the defense after losing a key attorney to cancer+ and expects the trial to follow the initial timeline.  Spectrum News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Buffalo’s Delaware Park marks 50 years of free live Shakespeare as Twelfth Night opens today at 7 p.m. on the Saul Elkin stage and runs through July 13 while Richard III starts July 24 and an abridged Romeo and Juliet is set to tour 25 venues across Western New York this summer—maintaining a long tradition of accessible, outdoor theater for all.  Buffalo Rising

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Preservation Buffalo Niagara and more than two dozen groups joined on June 2 to urge Congress to restore full funding for the Historic Preservation Fund after the President’s proposed FY 2026 budget would cut $197 million from this critical program — without these funds, over 11,000 historic consultation reviews and more than $7 billion in rehabilitation investments are at risk. The delay in releasing FY 2025 funds and planned National Park Service staffing cuts may further harm preservation work that supports affordable housing, heritage tourism, and economic growth statewide.  Buffalo Rising

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • David Robida’s DRGK Properties LLC is converting 138-142 Seneca Street into 16 apartments plus commercial space with a 3,876 sq.ft. addition, 16 parking spaces, and a new fourth floor at 138 Seneca. A new four-story structure is being built in an existing court space and will feature a metal panel system — Schenne & Associates designed the renovation plans.  Buffalo Rising
