COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Buffalo Sabres Foundation spent over $1.5 million in the past decade to transform the Resource Council of WNY’s East Side community center that serves over 7,000 residents annually — recently giving a $50,000 gift to cover operations over the next two years — and continues to back local community programs.  The Buffalo News
  • Jewish and Muslim leaders in Buffalo expressed deep concerns over the escalating Israel-Iran conflict and its impact on local families with ties overseas. Rabbi Alex Lazarus-Klein of Congregation Shir Shalom and Muslim leader Faizan Haq said they pray for peace and worry about potential regional consequences (including threats to oil supply and broader instability).  WGRZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Acting Mayor Christopher P. Scanlon announced today that construction on the $32.5 million Jefferson Avenue Streetscape Project will start this summer with Phase 1 from Main to Best Street costing $20 million and that Phase 2 design for Best to Swan Street will begin in fall—both phases will upgrade roadways, sidewalks, bike lanes, lighting and public amenities using Federal, State and local funds.  Buffalo Rising
  • The Buffalo Board of Education has hired Rupp Pfalzgraf LLC to investigate allegations that school officials covered up crimes on school property — and it said it would not comment further until the investigation is complete. • Buffalo Mayor Chris Scanlon began legal action under RPAPL Article 19-B to take over the downtown Buffalo Grand Hotel, which has been vacant since 2022 after a fire and shows 18 code violations + $89,777 in unpaid fees. The city will file a certificate of abandonment giving the owner 30 days to respond while it seeks a developer to restore more than 400 hotel rooms and revitalize the area.  WBEN
  • New legislation passed last week will redraw the Fourth Department district lines by splitting Erie County from the other seven counties to give candidates from less-populous areas a fairer chance.
