  • Past Saturday, Black Rock residents led by business owner Brennon Hall from Bridge Studios NY cleaned up litter and removed four shopping carts from Scajaquada Creek behind Wegmans before gathering at Sportsmens Tavern for live music and food. Local businesses supported the effort, and Bridge Studios NY is selling a special post-event T-shirt — with proceeds aiding youth and community outreach — to fund future projects.  Buffalo Rising
  • West Herr Automotive Group President CEO Scott Bieler received Daemen University's Presidential Medal, one of only five awards given to honor improvements in Western New York, and he serves on Daemen’s board—marking recognition for his work. Amherst Schools will hold a substitute jobs expo at Amherst Central High School on July 30 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with applications due by July 23, while the Buffalo Bisons will host Vintage Movie Night on July 19 with the team wearing jerseys inspired by the New York Knights from The Natural.  WBEN

  • Buffalo firefighters battled a house fire on Walter Street as they worked quickly to control the blaze — protecting nearby homes during the incident.  WGRZ

CRIME NEWS

  • Today, the Coast Guard and local law enforcement are patrolling the Great Lakes as part of Operation Dry Water to enforce boating safety rules — officers will check boats for proper safety gear and stop anyone who may be intoxicated.  WBFO

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Local farms have been shaken by recent ICE raids that left migrant workers frightened—farmers and state lawmakers warn that a broken immigration system could cause a severe labor shortage and threaten the food supply.  The Buffalo News
  • New York’s 106 industrial development agencies reported 4,282 projects last year with a total value of almost $136 billion, but only 215 were new and the focus has shifted to keeping jobs. In Western New York, local agencies handled 555 projects worth $9.9 billion & provided net tax breaks of $66.2 million while planning to add 14,343 jobs and retain 31,731.  The Buffalo News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • New York school districts are preparing for a ban on cell phone use during the entire school day starting in the 2025-2026 school year. Cuba-Rushford Central School District has already set its plans and all districts must publish their distraction-free policies by August 1—experts say parents should start discussing the changes with their children.  ABC 7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Erie County’s $36 million ErieNet broadband project has installed only 18 miles of fiber out of a planned 400 due to red tape and delays in accessing over 11,600 utility poles, county officials said. They expect more fiber to be installed by year’s end as permits clear and talks with utility companies—especially National Grid—speed up approvals.  The Buffalo News

  • Buffalo sports icon Marv Levy will turn 100 in a month and is set to celebrate with a birthday party at the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Aug.1, an induction ceremony on Aug.2, and memorabilia signings in Chicago on Aug.3. The Hall has arranged special transportation from Chicago to Canton and former Bills players along with locals praise Levy for his lasting impact — a milestone celebrated across the region.  The Buffalo News
