COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents of 201 Ellicott Apartments in downtown Buffalo held a protest Monday evening over years of poor maintenance, lost rent payments and wrongful evictions that began two years ago after a management change. Organized by tenant groups, they demanded immediate changes from Corvus Property Intelligence, calling for Superintendent Rhonda Turner's removal+ compensation for affected tenants.  WGRZ
  • Buffalo native Chad Houston was named the executive director of the 5/14 Memorial Foundation project that will honor the ten lives lost at Tops on Jefferson Avenue three years ago. Houston begins his role immediately and will work with community groups & foundations as the $15 million memorial plans to break ground next year.  ABC 7

CRIME NEWS

  • Niagara Falls police are investigating the murder of a 79-year-old woman—officials have not released additional details.  WGRZ
  • Buffalo firefighters responded to a 2-alarm fire just after 3 a.m. at 70 Deshler Street near Broadway + Bailey and found a vacant home engulfed in flames with $80,000 in damage where arson is suspected and emergency demolition requested, while a neighboring house at 68 Deshler Street suffered $20,000 in exposure damage + another vacant property at 81 Deshler Street had an attic fire with no reported damage and is set for condemnation.  WGRZ
  • Late Saturday, police responded to a disturbance on Buffalo’s East Side at Grider and East Delavan when juveniles fighting and partying launched fireworks at police and emergency medical personnel—pepper spray was used on the crowd and two individuals sustained non-life-threatening stab wounds with no arrests made.  WBEN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • D'Youville University announced plans to build new student housing for the 2027-2028 school year at 443 West Ave in Buffalo. The project will break ground in January 2026 and will include apartment-style units with full kitchens and in-unit laundry as officials clean up the site for safety.  WGRZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Health Foundation for Western and Central New York is awarding $500,000 to nonprofits addressing shortages among nurses, aides, and home health workers across our region. The funds come from a $9 million gift by MacKenzie Scott and will support training initiatives—such as distance learning for EMTs, dental hygiene programs, and a Healthy Aging Nursing concentration—to improve care access.  WGRZ
