Good morning, Buffalo. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 10th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Niagara Gospel Mission has recovered from a freezer malfunction that spoiled $25,000 of food — over $40,000 in donations and 3,000 pounds of food have helped restock its freezers above capacity — and the mission is now fully operational.  WBEN
  • Elmwood Taco and Subs will celebrate 50 years by hosting a community event on July 24 that will feature 50 cent tacos, free anniversary shirts for the first 50 guests, live music, and a drawing for a year's supply of tacos— the family-run restaurant has been a Buffalo staple since 1975.  Buffalo Rising

CULTURE NEWS

  • JazzBuffalo said it has developed a community first resilient plan to keep downtown jazz events going after the Richardson Olmsted Campus canceled the series — developer Rocco Termini helped relocate the concerts to the street in front of Tappo Restaurant. Two outdoor events will be held on August 10 and August 31; the first will feature The Brass Machine in a New Orleans style celebration and the second will host a swing dance themed Buffalo Jazz Festival.  Buffalo Rising
  • Buffalo’s Martin House has scheduled three outdoor concerts on its East Lawn. Guests can check in at 6:00 on July 23, August 20 and September 3 as Public Water Supply, Buffalo Chamber Players and The George Scott Big Band perform from 6:30 to 8:00 in free events that require advance registration and offer access to Statler Café and the Museum Store.  Buffalo Rising

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Six Buffalo Public School educators completed a pilot training today through Sophia's Legacy, a program with Buffalo State University's Anne Frank Project that uses trauma-informed techniques to teach about genocide and conflict. Supported by a two-year Vogt Family Foundation grant, these teachers will soon train others—spreading crucial knowledge and empathy in classrooms.  Buffalo State University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Scientists at Roswell Park found that cigarette butts leak dangerous chemicals into water in as little as one day—these include carcinogens, microplastics, and nicotine that can harm aquatic life. Lab tests will help reveal how this pollution affects our waterways and local wildlife.  Spectrum News
  • The NYSDEC announced a cleanup plan for the former Huntley Power Plant site in Tonawanda that will begin in July or August and take three months to complete. The plan involves removing contaminated soil and coal residue—adding community air monitoring and a health and safety plan—after the town seized the property by eminent domain in 2023.  WGRZ

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • BFC Partners will present revised plans on Monday to the Planning Board for two downtown mixed-use projects that will build 530 apartments+310 at the Towne Gardens Plaza site and 220 on the Medical Campus at Ellicott and Virginia.
