Good morning, Buffalo. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 15th of July.
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Amherst police investigated an officer involved shooting on Bailey Avenue Saturday afternoon after responding to a domestic disturbance where a suspect with a knife stabbed an officer before being shot by a second officer (one officer has been released) while the suspect remains at ECMC (the investigation is also reviewed by the District Attorney’s and Attorney General’s Offices as body camera footage awaits release) as the case continues. - ➤ Felice Brodsky-Brinkley recalled her 1976 romance with mobster Robert Reingold, who was killed in Buffalo in a gangland execution, and she said her actions may have led to his unsolved murder—police have made no arrests in nearly five decades. The Buffalo News
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Buffalo’s summer brings many events, with Chef Darian’s Jamaican Market Festival at Larkin Square on July 17 and the Buffalo Zoo’s Zoomagination Lantern Festival lighting animal-themed trails until October 5. Residents can also enjoy Preservation Day on July 26 with history tours and a Concert for Unity on July 25 — offering vibrant ways to experience local culture. Buffalo Rising
- ➤ Columnist Dan Higgins explored modern art at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum as art history professor Yvonne Widenour guided him through pieces that range from familiar to challenging — showing that art can raise more questions than answers. The Buffalo News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Last summer, some Buffalo Police supervisors discussed forming a separate union, but the Buffalo Police Benevolent Association—calling the idea treasonous—brought misconduct charges against Lt. Robert J. Mercurio, who was fined $1,250 and reprimanded in May. The Buffalo News
- ➤ The Town of Clarence will hold a public hearing on Aug. 13 at 10:15 a.m. at Town Hall to discuss proposed updates to its e-bike laws—if passed, violators of the new rules on trails could face a $250 fine or 15 days in jail and enforcement by state and county police will be allowed. WGRZ
- ➤ Cheektowaga is considering a law that would require short-term rental owners to register, pay fees, and follow occupancy and parking rules after a large party on June 7 led to neighbor complaints—while Lancaster is reviewing similar measures to protect neighborhood quality and ensure property safety. The Buffalo News
- ➤ In today’s court proceeding, the Seneca Nation asked the court to order the state to negotiate a new right-of-way for a 2.7-mile segment of the Thruway and claimed $21 million a year would be equitable compensation—citing a 1954 land deal they say was unfair. The federal lawsuit may force state officials to consider toll hikes if a court mandates renegotiations—potentially raising operating costs for the Thruway. The Buffalo News
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ A historic 75,500 square-foot site at 129-137 Tonawanda Street is now on the market for $2.15 million in a key transitional Buffalo neighborhood. The connected three- and four-story buildings — with sound infrastructure and eligibility for tax and brownfield cleanup credits — offer flexible opportunities for mixed-use, residential, or commercial redevelopment.
