  • Today, MLK Park near the fountain hosts the fourth annual 716 Community Day from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.—free produce, clothing, and 50 bikes will be given away to families with over 150 volunteers on hand. Sponsored by Tops Friendly Markets and Trusted Gives and born from a past tragedy, the event brings the community together for a day of support and fun—designed to help residents access fresh foods and essentials.  WBFO
  • Give 716 Day unites Western New Yorkers in a 24-hour fundraiser that began yesterday at 7:16 p.m. and continues today with sponsors matching donations hourly — offering prizes like Bills and Sabres tickets to support local nonprofits. Hundreds of charities from several counties are participating to help local families and children in need.  WGRZ
  • A Buffalo-based nonprofit earned national praise by Microsoft for its tech workforce programs that use Minecraft Education to help children and adults learn side by side. CRIME NEWS

  • An Amherst Police officer and a suspect were hospitalized after a domestic disturbance at a Bailey Avenue address at 4:55 p.m. Saturday— the officer was released early Sunday from Erie County Medical Center while the suspect remains hospitalized and the investigation continues.  WGRZ
  • Buffalo man Rashaan Mallory pleaded guilty to kidnapping a woman at gunpoint and shooting a 31-year-old man after forcing her into a vehicle on Moselle Street before ordering her to exit near Emerson Park; he remains in custody and is set to be sentenced on September 3.  ABC 7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Flotsam River Circus will hold three shows at Wilkeson Pointe at the Outer Harbor on August 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at 7 p.m.— the troupe will travel on a custom-built raft from Buffalo to New York City to celebrate the Erie Canal Bicentennial.  Buffalo Rising
  • Saul Elkin, a key figure in Buffalo’s theatre scene who founded Shakespeare in Delaware Park in 1976 and taught at the University at Buffalo, has died — he also worked with the Alleyway Theatre and the Jewish Repertory Theatre.  ABC 7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Buffalo School Board resolution passed in June to give district students better bus rides than charter students has increased tensions as charter leaders say the plan to cut transportation funding for charter students living between 0.7 and 1.5 miles from school may be unlawful — nearly half of charter students could be affected while the board tries to save money.  The Buffalo News

  • A billion-dollar project to reconnect a Buffalo neighborhood is moving forward after a judge halted work pending an environmental study + local groups now plan more talks to address community concerns. Neighbors will meet on August 21 to decide next steps + officials aim to speed up the process.  ABC 7

  • The Buffalo Sabres re-signed defenseman Bowen Byram to a two-year, $12.5M contract late Monday night that avoids arbitration—his deal will count $6.25M against the salary cap each season through the 2026-27 season.  ABC 7
