Good morning, Buffalo. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 22nd of July.
COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Volunteers from across the country are repairing 100 homes in Buffalo’s Niagara District this week as part of the Eight Days of Hope outreach project (including a 12-year-old from Arkansas). Homeowners are pleased as the repairs help restore damaged properties and bring much-needed support to the community. ABC 7
- ➤ Pantry 383 in North Tonawanda now uses a camper mobile unit to bring free food to neighbors as over 12 percent of the community lives in poverty. Operator Al Baker said he will run the mobile pantry one Saturday a month while keeping its regular Wednesday hours from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oliver Street. ABC 7
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A 60-year-old motorcyclist in Cambria was seriously injured after he veered into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with an SUV on Sunday afternoon, and a 38-year-old driver received treatment for minor injuries as investigators continued examining the scene. WBEN
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Buffalo developers will submit permits by the end of the month for ShotClub Social, a 48,000 sq. ft. golf-centered entertainment complex at 555 Elk Street that is set to break ground later this summer or early fall with an opening planned for early 2027. Buffalo-native Michael Colpoys was named president of National Fuel’s Gas Distribution Corporation after 38 years with the company — Canisius University raised $14.3 million last school year and local gas prices have risen two cents to $3.20 per gallon. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Niagara Falls Schools lost about $1.2 million in federal funding for mental health internships and a trauma awareness team, which may increase staff caseloads and slow the training of future mental health professionals. Superintendent Laurrie said he will use local funds to keep these programs running, though parts of the grants end by December—adding pressure to support students. The Buffalo News
- ➤ Buffalo Public Schools will announce a new superintendent today at 3 p.m. during a special Board of Education meeting — the vote follows Dr. Tonja Williams-Knight’s retirement after 35 years and comes as an independent investigation into past abuse claims is set to release its findings. WGRZ
- ➤ Buffalo State students took hands-on classes at Ferguson Electric where local experts showed real work examples and gave college credit. The program built strong industry connections—helping students get ready for jobs in electrical engineering. Buffalo State University
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Local advocates and Assemblymember Pat Burke urged state officials to open the future of the Tesla plant at Riverbend to a competitive process as its lease neared its end, amid growing concerns over job quality and state spending. An audit found that for every dollar spent the plant returned only 54 cents in benefits—intensifying calls for a fresh review of the deal. WBFO
- ➤ State Trooper Charanjot S. Tiwana from Jamestown, a Sikh, continues to be barred from growing his beard for his faith, which critics say violates a 2019 law that protects religious practices. Assembly Member David Weprin has urged Gov. Hochul to change the policy—ensuring that state employees can follow their religious traditions without compromising safety. The Buffalo News
