COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tom Petrie, the volunteer president of Buffalo Niagara Honor Flight, has spent over a decade helping more than 1,000 local veterans travel to Washington to honor their service. He will launch an all-female flight this fall and plans to bring recognition to homebound veterans—continuing his dedicated work with growing local support.  WGRZ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Buffalo Fire Department responded to a fire at South Park Golf Course Clubhouse on South Park Avenue near the Botanical Gardens just after 11:00 Tuesday night and found $250,000 in structural damage plus $125,000 in lost contents—Lackawanna Police also arrived as investigators looked into the cause.  ABC 7

CRIME NEWS

  • Buffalo Common Council President Bryan Bollman called on New York’s Attorney General to investigate flaws in the legal system after Amanda Thompson—a 44-year-old domestic violence victim—was murdered earlier this month on South Ogden Street by her ex-partner Rickey Crouch, who was arrested on I-90 when a state trooper spotted him, prompting Bollman to request a review of the timeline to understand how warning signs were missed.  ABC 7
  • Bonnie Bova, a Lancaster bookkeeper at an Amherst medical practice, pleaded guilty to stealing over $1.8 million by issuing checks to herself and altering records to hide it (she faces sentencing on January 5th with a maximum 25-year prison term).  WGRZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new report by Environment New York shows that Woodlawn Beach State Park in Blasdell and Hamburg Bathing Beach recorded many days with unsafe E. coli levels last year — Woodlawn had 37 of 113 days above the EPA limit. Health experts warn that the contamination can lead to illness and call for renewed investments in wastewater improvements to protect local swimmers.  The Buffalo News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Town of Tonawanda has hired local lobbying firm Masiello Martucci Hughes for $5,000 a month through 2027 to secure state and federal funds for cleaning up the former Huntley Generating Station site. The firm will help secure a $20 million grant for a new water project—while the town works to take over and redevelop the 72-acre property by the end of the year.  The Buffalo News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The 22nd Great Baby Beginnings event took place July 23 to support the Buffalo Prenatal-Perinatal Network by aiming to raise $55,000 through ticket sales, raffles and auctions — the funds will help moms attend prenatal appointments and secure critical home support.  ABC 7

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Tenants at Friendship Manor on Spring Street in Buffalo report roaches, rats, bedbugs, peeling paint, and a lingering odor in their apartments, and they claim management has ignored their calls and complaints. They have contacted 311, signed petitions, and called on the city to inspect the building—saying the poor living conditions are affecting their health.  WGRZ

  • The Bills will finish their season at the current stadium with no extra concerts or events planned—only games, as they prepare to de-commission the building after the final season. The team will focus on launching a big event to open the new Highmark Stadium before the first game next year.  WBEN
