COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Eden Corn Festival began on Thursday at the American Legion Post 880 grounds on Legion Drive in Eden and will continue through Sunday with free admission and a small fee for parking. The event features a midway, a craft show with 100 to 120 booths, a trade fair with 10 to 15 businesses, and an Agricultural and Community Showcase that raises funds for local groups.  ABC 7

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Tuesday night, a fire on Girard Avenue in Lackawanna killed a mother and her 4-year-old daughter and left two other children hospitalized—firefighters rescued other children from the burning house.  WBEN

  • Stergio Kompos is closing his Williamsville tailor shop today after 46 years of service—he began his business in 1970 with $50 and one suitcase from Greece and built strong ties with the community over the decades.  The Buffalo News

  • A Buffalo councilman asked Letitia James to review the investigation into DJ Granville after the Erie County Sheriff’s narcotics chief left the scene following a crash that hit six parked cars—causing nearly $60,000 in damage and placing five police officers on administrative leave.  WBEN

CULTURE NEWS

  • Great American Media will film over 20 movies and series at Great Point Studios on Niagara Street in Buffalo over the next two years—bringing local job opportunities in casting, crew, and creative roles. The project began earlier this year with A Christmas Spark and production on the next film is underway.  WBEN
  • On July 31, 2025, Fillmore District Councilmember Mitch Nowakowski announced that $65,000 was secured for five cultural institutions in Buffalo, including MusicalFare Theatre which plans 100 performances at Shea’s 710 Theatre next season—this funding will support discounted or free tickets to bring more people downtown.  WBFO

  • A federal judge ruled that new homes in New York must be built without natural gas access, moving the state closer to an all-electric standard. Local builders like Dominic Cortese worry the changes will raise costs & leave neighborhoods without a backup power plan.  WBEN
  • The NFTA released a Draft Environmental Impact Statement for a Metro Rail expansion through Tonawanda & Amherst to the UB South Campus that outlines its social, economic, and environmental effects. A 45-day public comment period starts with a public hearing on August 19 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Sweet Home Middle School, and construction will begin years later.  WBEN
