EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yamilette Williams and Faith Morrison sued Buffalo Public Schools for millions claiming their 2014 firings over lacking in-state certifications breached their contracts—an eight-member jury rejected their claims after a weeklong trial.  The Buffalo News
  • Buffalo State University reported its structural deficit increased nearly $4M to $16.2M for fiscal year 2024-25 due to rising costs from new collective bargaining agreements and increased scholarship commitments amid a steep 43% drop in enrollment. The university already implemented cost-cutting measures with voluntary separation buyouts and program cuts and plans further actions to balance its budget by fiscal year 2027-28 — efforts aimed at securing its long-term academic mission.  The Buffalo News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A report released Thursday said that poor care at the Batavia VA community living center helped cause a veteran’s death last year—his high blood sugar was not quickly reported to a doctor. The inspector general made 10 recommendations to improve dementia and diabetes care after a separate report in September found delays in patient treatment at the Buffalo VA Medical Center.  The Buffalo News
