BUSINESS NEWS

  • Community Bank is expanding its Buffalo presence by investing $6 million in a new regional office at 300 Corporate Parkway in Amherst that will be finished this fall—its subsidiary recently opened branches in West Seneca and Amherst and hired a new chief financial officer to boost growth.  The Buffalo News
  • KAV, a Silicon Valley company that makes 3D-printed bike helmets, relocated to Buffalo and completed its facility construction in April — it has hired initial team members and plans to hire several more workers to boost production using a streamlined process that assembles helmets from five parts.  ABC 7
  • Costco purchased a 16.6-acre site in Amherst for 6 million and will open its first Western New York warehouse in spring as part of a Benderson development that will cost nearly 22.5 million dollars. HEALTHeLINK named Paul Valley of Univera Healthcare to its board for three years — the Catholic Diocese will lay off 16 workers on August 31 to address a 150 million-dollar sexual abuse settlement and bankruptcy.  WBEN

CRIME NEWS

  • Two people with knife wounds were hospitalized early Monday after an incident on Tonawanda Indian Territory, Genesee County Sheriff Joseph M. Graff said — their injuries were not life threatening and deputies are investigating three connected scenes on Meadville Road, Skye Road, and a nearby field.  WGRZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Buffalo Common Council held a public hearing on rezoning a vacant city-owned site at 379 Paderewski Drive because the city plans to turn it into a three-story police training facility with classrooms, a gym (and an indoor gun range). Some nearby residents support the project while others are petitioning against it, and the council will vote on the plan in September.  WBFO
  • NYSCOPBA released its report on the corrections officers strike from earlier this year and stated the strike was illegal while unsafe work conditions—such as mandatory overtime, rising violence, and weak security—spurred the action. The union blamed lawmakers for worsening prison conditions and reported that about 2,000 staff who refused to return were fired.  WBEN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Baby Cameron, 10 months old, suffered a stroke after birth and now has medication resistant epilepsy that requires a hemispherectomy; his parents, Brad and Alyssa Casacci, have been denied coverage by Independent Health despite consulting specialists in Rochester and Pittsburgh. The surgery—expected to cost over $500,000—remains critical for his chance to gain seizure control.  WGRZ
  • A new study in the Journal of the American Heart Association shows kids who spend more time on screens than sleeping face higher risks of heart issues and weight gain. UB professor Fred Archer advises parents to cut screen time by letting kids earn it with healthy habits—limiting non-educational screen time to one hour for younger kids and two hours for older kids.  WBEN

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Elmwood Heights Apartments at the corner of Elmwood and Lexington have troubled neighbors for years and were condemned in spring; the bank repossessed the property after fines and owner issues and just last week it was listed for sale for $2.5 million—residents hope a new owner will fix the building.  ABC 7

SPORTS NEWS

  • Buffalo Sabres COO Pete Guelli said the city wants to host the NHL Winter Classic in 2028 to mark its 20th anniversary and is pushing for the event to return at the new Highmark Stadium + he noted that while NFL scheduling may pose challenges, the modern facility and careful planning should help overcome them.  WBEN
