COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local guinea pig rescue group rescued nine guinea pigs at Outer Harbor after they were dumped, including a pregnant animal that gave birth to three babies. Founder Jessica Meacham said the group is stretched with 117 animals in care and a waiting list of 10 to 12 weeks (community donations may help ease the strain).  WBEN
  • Registration is now open for the 130th YMCA Buffalo Niagara Turkey Trot scheduled for Thursday, November 27 — early bird pricing is available at $39 through Oct. 3 before increasing to $44 on Oct. 4. More than 14,000 runners and walkers are expected to join the historic 8K, and volunteers are needed for pre-race and race-day positions while proceeds support local YMCA programs.  WBEN

  • Nearly 10 years after KeyBank’s acquisition of First Niagara, the bank has boosted its presence in Buffalo by expanding its branches and deposit share while competing with new banks. KeyBank has also advanced its community investment plans and addressed lending disputes—although its current local employment figures remain unreported.  The Buffalo News
  • Costco picked up a building permit and began site preparations at its Amherst site—a day after closing a $6 million purchase—to ready the site for construction of its nearly $30 million store. Officials said work on compacting soil and excavating for drainage and footings is underway and the store is expected to open late this year or early next year.  The Buffalo News

  • Joseph Barsuk, the only customer charged in the Pharaoh’s investigation at the Cheektowaga strip club, has been offered a plea deal that would drop the coercion charge and sentence him to 5 to 10 years for conspiracy to commit sex trafficking—if he refuses the deal, jury selection will begin on August 18.  The Buffalo News
  • Three of Amanda Thompson's children in Buffalo are getting ready for school after she was fatally shot at her South Ogden Street home last month—her ex-boyfriend Rickey Crouch faces first-degree murder charges while friend Amanda Walker helps support the family.  ABC 7

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Buffalo & Erie County Public Library launched its 'Spin it Forward' campaign earlier this week—partnering with Buffalo Toronto Public Media’s The Bridge—to expand its vinyl collection after 1989 and ask residents to donate new and gently used records, while a listening station in the downtown library’s Grosvenor Room invites music lovers to explore the collection. The campaign also honors former director John Spears and aims to connect young audiences with a rich local musical history.  The Buffalo News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Buffalo will face hot weather this weekend as temperatures climb from the mid 80's today to about 90 by Sunday while a dry spell deepens drought concerns since 2016—humidity will push heat indices to the lower 90's by Monday. A weakening cold front will bring chances for showers and thunderstorms Tuesday.  WBEN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The corrections officers union criticized a May state report on the wildcat strike that occurred from February to March, saying it ignored issues like forced overtime — conditions that upset its roughly 10,000 members at 38 prisons. The union said it is ready to meet with state officials to work on real changes for safer, better-run facilities.  WGRZ

  • Doug Casa nearly died of heat stroke while running a 10K at UB in 1985—prompt treatment saved him and set him on his path to become a leader in heat stroke research. Today, he will host a survival party at Ocean Beach Park with 75 family members, friends, and colleagues—marking a life-changing moment that continues to inspire his work.  The Buffalo News
