- ➤ Cheektowaga Police reported 44 arrests this year for car thefts, with half involving teenagers as the rise in stolen vehicles spread to Amherst, where 52 cars were taken in July compared to 16 a month earlier—police urge residents to secure their vehicles. The Buffalo News
- ➤ Buffalo Police are investigating the theft of nearly a dozen Puerto Rican flags from Niagara Street on the West Side—days before the annual parade—and a local salon owner said the loss hurts the community deeply. WGRZ
- ➤ A Buffalo woman, Carmen Martin, was sentenced Monday morning in Erie County Court to 1 1/3 to 4 years in prison—her driver’s license was revoked—after she hit three bicyclists in Downtown Buffalo in 2022, killing one and injuring two, with a jury convicting her of criminally negligent homicide and third-degree assault. - ➤ Buffalo will host its 23rd annual Puerto Rican and Hispanic Day Parade on August 16 at noon, starting at Niagara Square and ending at Porter Avenue. Parade participants will return to Niagara Square for concerts, food vendors and a kids' zone featuring arts, crafts and a backpack giveaway—honoring the Puerto Rican and Hispanic community's contributions. - ➤ Western New York is in a flash drought that started in early July and has left lawns and grasses dry with little rain so far. Meteorologist Andy Parker said rain will come Wednesday to Friday to slow the dry spell before a heat dome pushes temperatures back up by mid-August — relief may be only temporary. WBEN

- ➤ Erie County is expanding the Southtowns Advanced Wastewater Treatment Facility in Hamburg with phase one underway and phase two set to be bid next year—this upgrade could cost over $200 million as rising construction costs and new state chlorine rules push borrowing higher.
