CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Defense lawyers for Payton Gendron, the gunman who killed 10 people in the racist Tops massacre in May 2022, asked a judge today to dismiss his 27-count federal indictment on claims that the grand jury lacked enough Black and Latino jurors—oral arguments on the motion will be heard soon. - ➤ On August 13th, Cheektowaga police attempted an arrest at an apartment on Sanders Road in North Buffalo when a man allegedly attacked officers with a knife—one officer shot him and he was pronounced dead at the scene; all four officers were placed on administrative leave as investigators from the Buffalo Police Department and Attorney General’s Office review the case. - ➤ Police have investigated six fatal crashes from late April to early August that left cyclists, e-bike riders, and motorcyclists dead in Amherst, Lancaster, Tonawanda, and other areas (with two drivers ticketed and four cases still under review) and have not said whether surviving motorists faced charges or citations. - ➤ The Erie Canal is celebrating its 200th anniversary in Lockport as Captain Roger Murphy and his family conduct tours through Locks 34 and 35, which lift boats 50 feet. - ➤ The DEC ordered Buffalo Biodiesel—a company that recycles used cooking oil—to cease operations by Aug. 29 after regulation changes and complaints led to the shutdown order, and the owner said if his revised plan is not approved, restaurants may have to turn to larger companies. - ➤ Police said a Town Board meeting on e-bike safety was held Wednesday after residents near Clarence reported issues with riders speeding without helmets.
