- ➤ Buffalo broadcasting legend Art Wander died Wednesday night at 98, surrounded by family. He built a long career at local and national stations, including WKBW and Empire Sports Network (and was honored by a 2008 induction into the Buffalo Broadcasters Hall of Fame). WBEN
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Documents released this week show that the Buffalo Fire Department missed four mayday calls during the fire at 743 Main Street on March 1 that killed firefighter Jason Arno due to too much radio traffic, and his widow has filed a lawsuit that says mistakes were made by the fire crew and property managers—trial will be held this fall in Erie County Supreme Court. - ➤ Cheektowaga Police shot and killed Hugh Davis Jr. of Buffalo during an attempted arrest at a Cheektowaga hotel after he allegedly lunged at officers with a large knife — body camera footage remains withheld pending family review as the New York State Attorney General’s Office and Buffalo Police Department conduct concurrent investigations. - ➤ Cheektowaga Police identified 60-year-old Hugh Davis after he was asked to leave Fairfield Inn for room damage and then returned in North Buffalo to attack staff and later lunge at arresting officers with a knife—forcing one officer to fire three rounds that fatally shot him. WBEN
- ➤ Attorneys for Payton Gendron filed a motion to dismiss his indictment—legal experts say the request now awaits a judicial ruling. WGRZ

- ➤ Grand Island’s Local Waterfront Revitalization Plan received state approval, giving the town a framework to enhance waterfront use, public access, water quality and recreational boating. Officials said the approved plan—covering over 20 projects including upgrades at Fisherman’s Landing and Scenic Woods—will allow them to apply for state grant funds as work begins soon. ABC 7
- ➤ Mayor Chris Scanlon sent a letter to City Comptroller Barbara Miller-Williams urging her to issue the bonds for the $110 million 2025 Capital Budget by Aug. 29—he warns that the delay has stopped projects, cost the construction season and endangered federal funds. WBEN
