- ➤ Family Promise of WNY helps homeless families move from crisis to stability by providing eviction prevention, temporary housing, and support services—like helping a mother of six leave shelter life for a new home. In 2025, the organization assisted nearly 40 families in Buffalo as they rebuilt their lives and regained strength. WGRZ

- ➤ Two insurance companies agreed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court to pay $122.5 million to help settle 900 sexual abuse claims—adding to the diocese’s planned $150 million payment so that the total settlement of $272.5 million gives the diocese until Oct.1 to submit a bankruptcy exit plan. WGRZ
- ➤ Attorney General Letitia James released a report stating that the Buffalo police officer acted lawfully during a July 10 traffic stop in which 29-year-old Daevon Roberts accelerated his vehicle and allegedly tried to grab the officer’s gun—resulting in a fatal shooting and the case closing with no charges filed. WGRZ
- ➤ Family and friends of Amanda Thompson, a 44-year-old murder victim killed in July by her alleged ex-boyfriend Rickey Crouch, rallied at Niagara Square on Wednesday to protest bail reform that allowed him to remain free despite past domestic violence incidents + calling for changes to protect future victims. - ➤ Pascal Mubenga has begun his work as Buffalo Public Schools superintendent and introduced a four-pillar plan—focused on accountability and student incentives—to guide the district. He said his team will work with HR to fill vacancies and fix transportation before school begins September 4. WBFO
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Buffalo Diocese bankruptcy case took a major step as the Survivors Committee reached a settlement with Wausau Insurance for $37.5 million and CNA for $85 million—bringing the combined settlement to $122.5 million. The diocese will submit its final plan by October 1 while other insurance companies are yet to agree on a deal. ABC 7
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Mount St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston will receive $7.5 million from Catholic Health to add new services, equipment and a multi-specialty clinic that will open this fall—more patient kiosks and updated registration will improve access to outpatient care.
