Good morning, Buffalo. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 3rd of September.
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Julian E. Taylor, 31, who has a criminal record in North Carolina — including a 2017 manslaughter conviction — faces charges of attempted murder, assault and weapon possession after a July 31 domestic violence attack in Lovejoy that left his 29-year-old girlfriend with severe injuries — and he is held without bail under a temporary order of protection. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Wind and solar projects in WNY now must show physical work before July 4 to get tax credits — a tough rule that may make some developers delay work until a new administration comes in. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Buffalo Common Council approved a zoning amendment Tuesday to renovate a vacant city property at 379 Paderewski Drive into a police training hub in Broadway-Fillmore—The council voted 6 to 2 and the project will cost roughly 5 million dollars funded by bonds, with plans to add classrooms, a gym and an indoor gun range while local groups remain divided. - ➤ Buffalo schools will use stop arm cameras that issue tickets immediately if drivers pass a stopped bus as the new school year begins tomorrow—digital safety message boards at intersections like Broadway and Fillmore remind drivers to stop. This enforcement replaces the warning system from last year to improve safety around bus stops. WBEN
- ➤ Buffalo Common Council members planned to question Police Commissioner Alphonso Wright about the Esquilin probe but learned the meeting will be postponed until October because his aides are out of town—Acting Mayor Chris Scanlon defended police involvement by saying he avoids interfering with Internal Affairs investigations. WGRZ
- ➤ Senator Gillibrand is pushing for $16 million to build a new command center at Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station—this upgrade will modernize refueling and logistics operations. The proposal also will allow Coast Guard search and rescue helicopters to base at the station and now awaits House review. WBFO
- ➤ On Tuesday, city lawmakers met in Common Council chambers to demand answers about the D.J. Granville incident from April 2024 and to schedule a Police Oversight Committee meeting with Police Commissioner Al Wright, who said he cannot meet because his staff are in training and on vacation—raising concerns about accountability and trust. Council members stress the need for a full review and timely answers as investigations continue. WBEN
