Good morning, Buffalo. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 5th of September.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Docked on the Buffalo River, the Edward M. Cotter fireboat has protected our waterfront for over a century and is celebrating 125 years of service. The 118‑foot vessel—which can pump 15,000 gallons a minute and breaks ice in the spring to help manage flooding—will be featured in a weekend reenactment of its 1900 arrival.  ABC 7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • D’Youville University received pre-accreditation for Western New York’s first College of Osteopathic Medicine and will begin admitting 90 students in fall 2026. The program will move to 285 Delaware Avenue in fall 2027—expanding to 180 students by 2028 and 720 student physicians by 2031.  WGRZ
  • Buffalo Public Schools began the year with Dr. Pascal Mubenga as superintendent — but a formal agreement with the police over the 10 student resource officers is still pending. School officials said they will work with the department to set clear roles and plan to discuss details at a board meeting on Sept. 17.  WGRZ
  • Students and staff returned to Buffalo Public School District schools on Thursday as classes began under new superintendent Dr. Pascal Mubenga following Dr. Tonja Williams Knight’s retirement—he stressed that regular attendance and the new cell phone ban would help students succeed. Dr. Mubenga will visit more schools on Friday to further welcome students and build support for the academic year.  WBEN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Students and staff at Cataract Elementary face concerns over air quality as the Niagara Falls School Superintendent plans a second test within the next two months—an earlier test did not show the cancer-causing chemical, though an independent expert says a plume may be present.  ABC 7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Buffalo residents shared mixed views at a public hearing on the state's proposed energy plan that calls for an all-electric shift by 2040—some felt the rules were too strict while others said the plan did not go far enough. Additional virtual meetings are scheduled for September 13 and September 30.  Spectrum News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Buffalo State freshman Marist Veres Royal became the youngest NCAA football player when he played as a tight end and fullback on Thursday night—at 16 years, 2 months and 21 days old he tied the debut age of NFL alumnus Amobi Okoye from 2003. An NCAA representative said official records do not confirm the record.  ABC 7
  • The Bills restructured left tackle Dion Dawkins’ contract—freeing $7.5 million in cap space—while giving him a three-year, $60 million extension through 2027; the team also signed receiver Gabe Davis to the practice squad and cut veteran safety Jordan Poyer to make room for Davis on injured reserve. This move ensures the team meets NFL salary cap requirements.  Spectrum News
  • Bills quarterback Josh Allen said he will trust his game plan and warmup for Sunday's season opener against the Ravens, avoiding unnecessary risks—he noted his old habit of taking hits is not advisable now.
