COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Western New York celebrated the 125th anniversary of the Edward M. Cotter fireboat with a ceremonial reenactment in Buffalo—more than 20 boats escorted the vessel near the Naval Park. Cotter Fest will be held on Sept. 20 at River Fest Park to raise funds to keep the historic boat in service.  WGRZ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Buffalo Fire Department responded to a 3‐alarm blaze on Victoria Ave near Hill Street in the Fillmore‐Leroy neighborhood late Friday night, damaging the upper level of one home and causing external damage to two nearby houses—firefighters worked until 2 a.m. Saturday as they investigated the incident.  WGRZ

CRIME NEWS

  • On Saturday morning, a car crashed into the underground entrance of the NFTA Metro Rail on Main Street—police report one person is in custody—and details are still emerging.  WGRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Schools in Western New York are using AI tools this school year as Grand Island Central School District begins its second year with Khanmigo — an online tutoring tool for grades 6 through 12 — to support student learning. Researchers at UB are also developing an AI screener for speech and language issues while educators urge clear talks about using the tool appropriately.  WGRZ

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Developers in West Seneca are moving forward with plans for two long-vacant sites—Benchmark Streamline will build a new retail center at the former Seneca Mall that keeps the existing Tops store while state officials plan to redevelop 267 acres of the old Developmental Center into hundreds of new homes. The mall project will begin in October and finish by 2028 as the plans go through planning board reviews and required infrastructure studies.  The Buffalo News

  • Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is expanding his national profile with new endorsement deals with brands such as SoFi and New Balance—he will appear in campaigns on TV and social media ahead of his next NFL game while his partnerships also support local community sports programs.  The Buffalo News
  • UB football won its home opener 45-6 over Saint Francis at UB Stadium with strong running plays led by running back Henderson and key actions from quarterback Roberson. The Bulls will begin Mid-American Conference play next week at Kent State — following a road loss to Minnesota last week.  WGRZ
  • Today, quarterback Josh Allen will wear a custom cap painted by nine Oishei Children’s Hospital patients for the Bills home opener against the Ravens – each cap, including one by five-year-old Jaxson Bauer, will be auctioned to benefit the Patricia Allen Fund.  ABC 7
