COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, Niagara Falls hosts the Lt. Zell Badges on the Border International Memorial Torch Run where over 100 law enforcement officers from the U.S. and Canada register at 9:30 a.m. at the Aquarium of Niagara’s Great Lakes 360—then kick off at 10:15 a.m. to carry the Flame of Hope along a route ending at the middle of the Rainbow Bridge to support Special Olympics New York.  WGRZ
  • Guest readers at Sisters of Charity Hospital’s NICU— including anchor Katie Morse who read Corduroy—are reading to premature babies during a 10-day Read-A-Thon that includes 300 NICUs nationwide; the contest runs through the end of this week as the hospital partners with Alice, Ever After Books to send books home with local families while aiming to improve on its sixth-place finish from last year.  ABC 7
  • Crews will remove the old playground at the 4th Street side of Ralph Wilson Park as part of site preparation for a community-designed Kaboom playground that volunteers aged 18 and older will help build from September 25—27, with the new playground set to open in October. The park is also a finalist for a Levitt Music Series grant that could fund a restored amphitheater for free live music when its first phase reopens about a year from now.  WGRZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, the Hispanic Heritage Council of Western New York celebrates its 15th anniversary at the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library with a musical program and cultural showcase. The council—led by founder Casimiro Rodriguez—is planning to build Upstate New York’s first Hispanic Cultural Institute while local leaders and community members prepare for a Latin Parade and Fall Fiesta in Toronto on September 27.  WGRZ
  • Buffalo firefighter and private chef Camille Le Caer will compete on Food Network's Halloween Baking Championship, which premieres this week and airs Monday nights at 9 p.m. He runs his private chef studio at 27 Chandler Street in North Buffalo and offers hands-on cooking classes.  WGRZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Buffalo firefighters had low water while fighting a house fire on Victoria Avenue earlier this month, forcing them to use a working hydrant — a block away. Masten District Council Member Zeneta Everhart has introduced a resolution asking Fire Commissioner William Renaldo to report on hydrant inspections and maintenance.  ABC 7
  • Gov. Kathy Hochul and three top elected officials in Western New York called for a reset in political rhetoric on Monday+ they warned that rising divisiveness has spurred increased political violence.  The Buffalo News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Jericho Road Community Health has named Dr. Allana Krolikowski as its new CEO (she will succeed founder Dr. Myron Glick) as the organization prepares for its next chapter.  WGRZ

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Two housing projects that would add nearly 200 new apartments in Buffalo face neighbor opposition over building heights + concerns about traffic and water supply. Developers of the Diamond and Lafayette Lofts projects plan to request variances and hold public hearings soon.  The Buffalo News
  • Developer David Mazur plans an 80-apartment complex for $14.3 million—set to begin construction this spring on a nearly 10-acre site along Sawyer Road in Wheatfield. The project awaits local approvals and a tax break from the Niagara County Industrial Development Agency.  WBEN
  • South Buffalo’s McKinley Parkway Historic District now covers over 5,000 buildings between South Park Avenue and Cazenovia Park following its historic designation by New York State—homeowners can get a 20% tax credit on approved renovations. Preservation Buffalo Niagara will host virtual workshops on Zoom this coming Tuesday to explain the program.  WBFO

SPORTS NEWS

  • Buffalo's Bills will face the Jets Sunday at MetLife Stadium and must overcome the loss of Ed Oliver—injured when a teammate stepped on his ankle in practice Wednesday—which weakens an already thin interior defensive line amid suspensions. Coach McDermott said rookie T.J. Sanders is expected to step up while quarterback Josh Allen will lead the offense to counter the Jets’ attack.  WGRZ
  • Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen left the game briefly on Sept. 14th after getting a bloody nose during the first quarter against the Jets at MetLife Stadium and returned at the start of the second quarter — his trainers quickly treated his injury.  WGRZ
  • Buffalo Jills alumni hope to have one final performance at Highmark Stadium—before the Bills move to a new venue. Former co-captain Natalie Nirchi said the group has turned to social media to rally local support.  ABC 7
