COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Buffalo Waterfront will host Fall Fest at Canalside on September 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., offering free activities such as storytimes, a petting zoo, live music by the Alumni Band — kid passes for $5 provide access to pumpkin decorating and ice skate rentals for the winter season.  WGRZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Famed actor Robert Redford died at 89 and remains linked to Buffalo after filming his baseball film The Natural here in the summer of 1983. Commissioner Tim Clark recalled how the production boosted local confidence and helped show Hollywood Buffalo's unique charm—an influence that continues to inspire filmmakers.  WGRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Buffalo State has been without hot water in several buildings for 12 days—about 655 students in Moore Complex and Towers rely on shower trailers and Perry Hall for bathing. Repairs to the underground steam system are ongoing and full restoration is expected soon.  ABC 7
  • University at Buffalo President Satish K. Tripathi announced Monday that he will step down next July after leading the university since 2011 through growth, a pandemic, and new AI degree programs launched this fall. He will return to teaching in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences next fall—continuing his long commitment to UB.  WGRZ
  • Satish Tripathi, the first internationally born and longest-serving president at UB, will step down in 2026 after nearly 15 years—UB will soon begin searching for a new leader.  The Buffalo News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New York Boards of Election are urging eligible voters to check their registration status and sign up by October 25 to vote in the November 4 general election. Local races including positions for Buffalo Mayor and county boards and a statewide ballot proposal on using part of the Adirondack Preserve for Nordic skiing will impact many communities—voters should verify their status soon.  WGRZ
  • Councilmember Zeneta Everhart said faulty hydrants delayed firefighters from battling a fire on Victoria Avenue in the Masten District on Sept. 5, forcing them to fetch water from a hydrant a block away while four adults were displaced—she has filed a resolution asking Fire Commissioner Renaldo to explain how hydrants will be properly maintained.  WBFO
  • State officials filed a lawsuit on Tuesday in Supreme Court against the Buffalo Sewer Authority for missing deadlines in its 2014 control plan that was meant to reduce pollutants at the Bird Island Wastewater Treatment Facility—state officials now seek to force BSA to update its plan and lower discharges with penalties of up to $37,500 per day. This action may affect how the agency manages its future sewage discharges.  WGRZ
  • A state board recommended 20 properties and districts be added to the State and National Registers of Historic Places including five Buffalo Niagara sites — a move to boost historic preservation and honor local heritage.  The Buffalo News

HEALTH NEWS

  • 1199SEIU members ratified a three-year contract with BryLin Hospital for over 200 mental health workers—improving sign-on bonuses, expanding referral rewards, updating job classifications, boosting health insurance contributions, and adding Juneteenth as a paid holiday at time and a half—and also including a total 12% wage increase through 4% annual raises retroactive to July 1.  WGRZ

  • Joey Bosa made a quick impact for the Bills by getting one sack and three forced fumbles in his first two games. The veteran free agent—once a top player with the Chargers—will boost the team's defense when Buffalo hosts Miami on Thursday night.  WGRZ
