COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Edward M. Cotter Fireboat, 125 years old and the world's oldest working fireboat, will be celebrated today at Riverfest Park on Ohio Street from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.—the event will include live bands, food, kids activities and a water cannon display at 2:15 p.m. with tickets at $30 and free admission for children under 12.  WBEN
  • Today the Lancaster Boys Varsity Soccer Team is hosting an equipment drive in Lancaster to collect new and gently used sporting gear for Leveling the Playing Field WNY— a group that provides equipment to kids in Western New York. The drive runs from 10 a.m. to noon outside the athletics door.  WGRZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Elmwood Village businesses are hosting Lex Fest today from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the corner of Lexington and Ashland avenues. The community event—created to fill the gap left by the discontinued Elmwood Art Fest—will feature live music, local vendors, and artwork by neighborhood artists.  WGRZ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Daich Coatings from Hamilton, Ontario signed a contract to use the old SetterStix plant in Cattaraugus Village for its first U.S. operations by the end of this year—this deal, aided by county tax breaks, will hire 25 workers and has attracted further interest from Canadian companies.  WBEN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Buffalo State will host Homecoming and Family Weekend with the 'Ignite the Roar' theme from Monday, September 29 through Sunday, October 5. The campus and community will enjoy events like a soccer game, a poetry slam, and tours of Buffalo—showing Bengal pride in many ways.  Buffalo State University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bishop Michael W. Fisher will soon travel to the Vatican—he requested the meeting—to update church officials on plans to combine parishes into families and to discuss Chapter 11 reorganization. A diocese spokesperson said the trip is a routine but necessary step to update the Road to Renewal process and settle issues with the Creditors Committee.  WGRZ
  • The Buffalo Sewer Authority settled with state regulators by paying a $20,000 penalty and promising to invest $100,000 to upgrade Roosevelt Park with new playground equipment and environmental displays — a commitment aimed at preventing future violations.  WGRZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Buffalo Sabres' defenseman Rasmus Dahlin said his fiancée, Carolina Matovac, suffered heart failure while on a vacation in France early this summer, received life-saving CPR and a heart transplant — she is still recovering in rehab.  WGRZ

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Eleven Eleven Elmwood is a high-end condo building at Elmwood and Forest avenues that opened its shell in early spring but still needs work as buyers customize their units. Developer Mark Chason said full completion will take a couple of years and that retail and outdoor spaces are still in progress—only half the units have been sold.  The Buffalo News
